From the pages of the Jan 5, 1966 New Zealand Womans Weekly the reason for the success of NZ drivers! There was obviously something in the tea...a rather tenuous link at best I would have thought

Can anyone identify the driver or car?

Any other ads that feature motor racing linked to products one wouldn't normally associate with the cut and thrust of dashing young men and machines?

Well now it is all clear why I never made it to Indy. I thought it had to do with money and politics and ride buyers taking over for talent and all that stuff. But now I realize, I failed because I never got ahold of any of the damn Kiwi tea!!!

Well, I'd say that #17 is probably Cooper T70; the driver looks like McLaren. I think you should look it up where Bruce had this car number. I believe that it is the photos from Tasman Cup.

I'm pretty sure that is Red Dawson in the ex Jimmy Palmer T45 that Charlie Conway here in Auck owns .F2/13/58. photo probably from the 65 season, as he ran a Brabham BT4 in 66.

A bit small to see properly... but the lower car pic (Wigram?) looks like it's 1.5-litre cars to me.

Does that bring Roly Levis or (perhaps... or is it too early?) Graeme McRae into the equation?

Here's a close up...John Riley raced a Lotus 18/21-Climax carrying #17 in the NZ leg of the 1965 Tasman Series...possible?

Well, whoever it was, he certainly made sure his benefactor at Shell was a happy man...

Johnny Riley had the ex Shelly Lotus 18/21 in 1965/66. It raced as #17 but that may not be the car in the tea time photo.

Looking at the larger pic I think you guys are right, it does look like the Lotus 18/21.But is it the same car in the forground of the bottom picture?

Now the picture's been blown up, it's definitely Johnny Riley in the ex-Shelly Lotus 18/21
Bottom one's a bit harder to see - probably Roly Levis (Lotus 22) and Rex Flowers (Lotus 20B)

Duncan:
Charlie Conway's Cooper T53 F2-13-58 is not the same ar as the T45 which originally bore that number.
Also, in spite of what many have written over the past 40 years, Red Dawson's name was Irvine, not Ian.

Quite right about the Cooper - you can't make a 1958 F2 car low lined. The car went to England and the chassis plate returned but on another car - a T53 would be my guess.

I.W.Dawson??

Irvine eh? Never knew that..
