Is this the point when Alonso felt unloved at Mclaren?

Because he didn't ask?

I'd be willing to bet that if Heikki asked his bosses for an equal chance at the car, they'd say sure. It's not like they can both win the next two WDCs.

Who do "most onwers of a McLaren" have to explain what make their car is? I don't think so. Its hardly the car to take down to the Supermarket. Its for driving, not for getting out of. Any person with a knowledge of cars knows about the McLaren F1. The rest who don't - who cares about them anyway?

And neither car can be driven every day anyhow. That's why Porsches are so popular. And most people don't know which Porsche you've got anyway. But who cares about them anyway?

Well given that supercars or any luxury car are terribly impractical why are you buying them if not mainly to show off?

Luca only give Kimi a Fiat500 for winning the WDC, didn't he?

Porches are great to drive, and cheap to run. Prestige as well, but the cheaper ones don't cost much ( they are older of course) and that is to buy - while they have some maintenance issues, they don't depreciate if you buy an old enough one. And they look the same as the newer ones to most folk. A 911 is just that - a 911. Only the people who know things about the cars would know the difference in the dollars. So, its not all prestige with a 911. An old Corvette cost more than a newer one - but most people woudn't have a clue that some older ones are worth more. So that can't be prestige either to most people. But then you can have a nice hedge with such classic cars.

Supercars though - such owners have several of them. Their mileages are therefor very small. If its purely prestige, then why have several? Most of them do. Its more than showing off. Supercars owners are mostly already very well off. Those that aren't, it maybe showing off, but some of them love cars and have had goals in life to have such things. Good on them.

Hell, I'd personally - singly - invade a sovereign nation and take their capital building for a Porsche 997 GT3RS... And I wholeheartedly agree - those who don't really know what it is don't really matter. At least when it comes to cars, image and such.

Sports cars are selfish; supercars even more so. It's about driving, but most cannot extract much of their potential so it could be argued that they are about potential performance. And I'm okay with that. I've always been a lightweight Porsche 911 fanatic: '73 Carrera RS, 911 SC/RS, 964 Carrera RS, 996 GT3 & GT3RS, GT2, 997 GT3, GT3RS and GT2. If I comfortably had the coin I'd have them all, too. But the average American and European would only know that they are Porsches and wouldn't "get" the spartan interior much less the harsh ride. They aren't cars to be seen in, really, and I'd not care if they only came in Black, Red and White with small swastikas embroidered in the seat backs I'd still drive the hell out of them. To me they are nirvana on four wheels closely followed by those feral Ferrari 360 and 430 coupes.

Yes, there's no place to drive them and since there is no run-off on 99.9% of all public roads one really cannot "play" with them except on Open Track Days which while is fun I think it more "fun" to use the power and responsiveness to get around traffic on public roads (if a bit juvenile). Even if I had the money I cannot see myself purchasing anything like the McLaren F1, Enzo or Carrera GT though the current GT2 is every bit as capable in the proper hands. So they are actually rolling works of art I guess. I'm okay with that. I wish I could afford to indulge.

Anyone need a nation toppled??? :

The rarer something is the more sought after it is, the more people will pay for it. That's why a Ferrari costs so much. That's why a John Lennon autograph costs so much.

And to answer your question. Only five were made, which as you correctly said was to celebrate a Le Mans victory. They clearly weren't made to be sold in Mercedes showrooms on the high street. What do you mean did Ron keep a few to maintain it's exclusivity? They only made five! How exclusive do you want?

One of them has been with Mclaren in their old and their current buildings. That's the one on offer to Lewis.

It's not a matter of Mclaren not being able to get rid of it. It's never been for sale.

I am not offended and thanks for your comments.

Wouldn't mind an Ascari either; there just crap at racing!

Having a McLaren F1 GTR wouldn't be a bad thing - Suppose Lewis could take it if he wins, then sell it on when he gets bored of it! I'm sure Ron would like that! The EMKA car was at Silverstone last year for the GT90's and it looked bloody amazing. It only did the one lap of practice and was then withdrawn, but what a stunning car.

Think i'd sooner have a Mosler MT900R or a F575 Maranello though! Saying that, one of the Classic Car magazines had a listing for £425k worth of 2004-Spec Lister Storm V12 :D
