Jean Alesi running out of fuel in Melbourne 1997 is a pretty vivid memory. I'd always understood that he'd ignored pit requests to come in. But recently I read that his radio wasn't working. Can anyone shed any light on the real story?

Jean Alesi runs out of fuel, Melbourne 97. What really happened?

I've wondered about this one too...
I feel that he might have had something wrong with his car that would prevent him getting out of the pits after a stop, like maybe the clutch had failed or similar. If that were the case, why not stay out until it runs out, get higher up the order before retiring?
He would have still been able to get pit signals, surely?
