Alan Smith has passed away. His funeral service is May 2nd at Portchester Crematorium. Alan was a very talented photographer who started in the late 1930s. His best known images were from the 1950s and he was the author of the excellent photo book "Fifties Motor Racing - The GP Scene." He will be missed by all those who knew him and enjoyed his images.

Sad to hear this news. Alan was, IIRC, one of the first of the photographers who made their mark in the 'fifties to be 'rediscovered' in the 'eighties, when Jarrotts began marketing archive photographs from his collection at the time when historic festivals were beginning to make their mark on the motor racing calendar. I saved up my pennies and bought a small number of his photos from Jarrotts and was delighted when he got into print with his book mentioned by klemcoll. His work, and that of others like him, bring to life a golden era for those of us who were not fortunate enough to have experienced it for real.
