From my understanding, the turbo location was Mark's decision. Bobby Unser placed third with a similar Leader Card entry sponsored by Bardahl and also powered by the turbo Offy. It has its turbo in the commonplace rear location. Mark's car has a more pronounced rear spoiler that he thought would be more effective than any negatives of the turbo being in the airflow between the left side wheels, plus the turbo weight would be low and left.

Used to be when you went in the Penske Musuem in north Scottsdale AZ the lady would say you couldn't take pictures of any of the Marlboro livery cars!  For some reason, the last couple times I've been there she doesn't say that anymore...

They have a big TV in the middle with old re-runs of Can-Am races narrated by Sam Posey-  that always hooks me for a few minutes!  When they show Road America, I always try and find the 20 something version of me in there somewhere!

B2-  nice family segments of yours in that ESPN show from way back...  noticed your message to Michael A.  I was lucky enough to have raced against him a few times.  Met him the first time when we pitted next to each other at Blackhawk Farms in our spec Miatas.  He introduced himself and I had to ask him about his last name, only to find out he was "royalty."!    And then to find out his wife as also a radiologist.   Small world.

His books are fantastic-   what a loss...

SKL, thanks for the nice note regarding Michael Argetsinger. He was one of the best friends I've ever had and I think of him daily. His family continues to be a part of my life, I call them my "extended Argetsinger family," it's amazing that that they continue to include me in the racing part of their lives and leave an open invitation for whenever I go to Watkins Glen. Michael just grew up in a family that has a giving, warm and loving environment that made it so easy to gravitate towards him and he responded by being one of the best influences and most decent of individuals that (if we are lucky) one may experience once in a lifetime. My life is all the better for knowing him and loving him like a brother. You bet he's missed; thanks for remembering - hard to believe we're fast approaching two years since he's passed.

SKL, I'm sorry to say that I haven't been to the Scottsdale facility. I've heard nothing but good things about it and have seen photos that show it off too. My bucket list has one last drive (on Route 66, as much as possible to replicate my family's 1965 drive to see my grandparents in California) out west on it and will experience it then. Hard to believe it's been over 30 years since I've been in California - at an Indy Car race, of course.

One of Donohue's F1 cars is usually in the musuem in AZ-  always bothers me to know what happened in Austria...  there is a picture in Kirby's book about Kainhofer that shows Mark sitting on the ground with crew after the accident, obviously before the epidural hematoma was showing its effects.  Chilling to say the least.

I'll never forget watching Donohue at Road America both in Trans Am in the late 60's and later in the Can-Am and the precision of his driving-  every lap, the same line, same shift points, etc.   And of course, the fact you could eat of the floor of their pits,  watching the crew clean and wax the cars after every session.

One of my most-memorable was the Road America Can-Am in '73. After winning handily, Mark took his helmet off for the cool-down lap, and what stands out even today was his beaming smile. After meeting him many times, it was the very last time I saw the man.

I'm assuming that Paul, like me, thought that he could see Mr. P there in the background (dark jacket and Valvoline? cap) ; whoever captioned the image file seemed to think he was in the pic too.

Is it not him?

I see Jim Garner at the extreme left. I'm not too sure about the gentleman looking to his right in the Valvoline hat (when sponsored by Sunoco) being Mr. Penske. In that era, he is rarely seen wearing a hat (to the best of my recollection) and the individual in the photo doesn't seem to be as sharply dressed as RP would usually be seen. Of course, I've been wrong before.

Around the middle of last year, I bought a new car from Mr Penske. I thought I was buying it from Frank Sytner (Sytner Mercedes Weston Super Mare), but it seems he sold out some time ago to Mr P, that man gets everywhere.

A few years ago* Roger Penske was the largest Ferrari dealer in the world, owning all or part of seven dealerships in the U.S. and Europe.  That may still be true, although I know he's sold his interest in one and possibly two of the dealerships.  I believe he also owned the largest Toyota dealership in the U.S., in Southern California (is that still true?) and I think the largest Chevrolet dealership, also in the L.A. area (which I think his son was running).  I think he's the most impressive businessman I've ever known.

As a driver he was named Sports Illustrated's "Road Racing Driver of the Year" in 1961, and I think may have been on the cover of that issue of the magazine.  He drove for Jim Hall and John Mecom Jr. among others.  Banks insisted that he stop risking himself in racing and pay attention to his dealership.

(*As I'm well into my 70s I've found that time measurement has changed:  "just the other day" is one or two years ago; "recently" is five years or so; "a few years ago" is ten; and "Oh yeah, I remember that" is closer to fifty years.)

Roger Penske at the pit wall at Indianapolis in the late stages of either the 1969 or 1970 "500" - my dear friend Jerry Kroninger is second from the left in the photo. He was the over-the-wall fueler for Mark in these two Indy races. He was wholely integrated into Team Penske, but was employed by Sunoco and one of their very respected engineers. When Sun Oil hierarchy found out Jerry had gone over the wall in these two races, they requested he no longer put himself in such a precarious position. He was part of Team until they moved to Pennzoil, but is still fondly remembered within Team and included in various reunions.

As I recall, only twice over the course of the entire year for that particular car!
