Something of a McLaren tradition to send their drivers off to do some PR stunt dressed in Nomex and looking completely out of place and more than a little stupid. I seem to recall Hakkinen dressed in race overalls showing up at a bleeding circus for a McLaren PR exercise, looked like a complete muppet. Seems to me Raikkonen is rather more canny than people give him credit for, by moving to Ferrari and insisting on only having to do the bare minimum when it comes to PR appearances me thinks the Finn would have had a wry smile on his face when he sees Hamilton rushing about from one PR stunt to the next.

If they had done it right, they'd have had the Achaeans attack Troy from a Trojan Prancing Horse.

Plain ridicilous, I think. But that is what you get when working for McLaren.

I wonder if we'll get an interview with Antony over the weekend? How he got talked into letting this happen I can't imagine, but I suspect he's furious now. Hope we get a word!

McLaren are so useless at PR, worse if anything since Bishop started, he's been a total disaster.

Well done Matt Bishop!

From a Ferrari point of view, you are doing a FANTASTIC job at McLaren! :rotfl:

Hadnt he already started working for McLaren on the sly whilst still being the editor in chief in charge of F1 Racing? I think he was working for the 'get Ralf out of F1' multinational as well. Oh and 'Loud shirts R us'. Oh and 'Im the main man in F1 dont you know and i know far more about it than you 'general public' readers inc'

Hmm i cant think of anymore.

 Im sure hes a top bloke really

If this really is Matt Bishop's idea he ought to be shot. Talk about turning your drivers into a laughing stock, Hamilton's probably been mentally scared by this experience (or at least he will be when the pictures come back). Oh dear McLaren. :drunk:

It seems that seeing Lewis flying like a fairy has made quite a few people bash the bishop. :D

Well they also report it in the daily mail, not that that makes it any more credible.

Kimi dressed as a gorilla driving a powerboat ... cool
Kimi partying with friends and entering races under the name "James Hunt" ... cool

This ... absolutely tragic. I'm a Hamilton fan and thereforea but gutted!

If i was Hamilton, i would just have said **** you to Vodafone, ill pay the price for it out my own pocket because there is no way your getting me up on a rope flying round like a douchebag, thats not good PR, still everyone is talking about how lame it was, so i guess it worked

It seems a bit dangerous, as well, given the fate of Owen Hart.

But McLaren's sponsors aren't concerned with anoraks like us. They after mass market penetration, which means the news channels and the daily papers. They'd certainly have got that. Can't help but think DC flying weightless was somewhat cooler though...

IMHO that was one of the most pathethic PR stunt ever, but on the other hand it was devilishly funny! :rotfl:

In a way I feel sorry for the guy, he's still very young, it's very easy to get steamrolled having a whole bunch of people around you going

'you have to do this'
'it's alright it will look great'
'it's acting you want to act don't you?'
'common it's only one little thing, just do it already'.

You can tell he had his doubts going into it, first thing reportedly he asked was did he look like a tool. When the answer was a resounding yes, he went into the now typical Lewis Hamilton Bunker-mode, defending it without question, despite himself having questioned it moments earlier.

That is very much a case of someone steam rolled into something they were uncomfortable with, and then having to live with it afterwards.

More effective management on his Dad's part could have prevented it. But it's done now, and I think lesson learnt really. Vodafone aren't going to get him doing any PR stunts again in a hurry.

It does make you wonder though if you could imagine an Alonso, or Schumacher or Senna or whatever being involved in something like that.

Schumacher maybe - he's got that whole camp vibe going he could have probably pulled it off.

Here is the full video for those people who can bear it.

http://news.bbc.co.u...one/7390862.stm

I bet he was thinking "why did I sign that bloody 5 year contract. I bet Luca doesn't get his boys to look like tits in front of the world."

At the start of the video it gives a warning about flash photography. IMHO it should have read

"GUIDANCE : This video contains scenes of a grown man making a total tit out of himself" :)

It's very common for the public to diss people in the spotlight. It reminds me of when the Olympic logo for London was revealed - many people bashed it and laughed at it. But when you look at it know, it is not bad at all.

It's just the jealous nobodies who love to bash anything.

Now I hate Lewis but if you look at the video, big deal. The guy is even smiling himself. Just a bit of harmless fun. People love to bash - "oh big PR disaster, oh big mistake by Lewis, oh Kimi is better" etc.

For Pete's sake, who cares, no one is making a deal out of this except people who think they have something to bash about. In 2 days, this story will be buried anyway.

Just watched the video... gosh that took ages to finish.

Instead of looking like a mighty powerful God he looked like a helpless embarrased puppet...

Poor Lewis....

They could have hung up a wax doll of Lewis in a suit.... there wasn't much expression there..

I think no sports star in the world has ever embarrased himself like this....

I hope that Ron the ever-perfectionist of Mclaren's image is happy now.
