I got this off the comments section on the your tube page:

I approached the corner in a totaly different and awkward way and it just happened to work. With the speed the corner is taken the front wing's aerodinamic pressure is minimum, no difference of the angle that cuts the turn.

Video

About 15 seconds into the video, Schumacher had that slide, the reason I liked this pole alot, is it looked like a mistake, but Michael usually in his career at times locks up when he's on the real limit, in some of his best drives, and has moments, but still keeps the speed and momentum rolling, he was literally on it that weekend, on fire, and then in the race he was on fire in the pits.

Normally pole positions are crisp fast and sometimes on the edge ragged, but online, but what made this pole cool, was likely Michael's set up comprimises to get the best out of the car, as that 2003ga was mixed beast on some tracks, especially in the slower corners, but Michael maximised what he could, I thought this was one of his great poles, plus with the pressure of one lap quali as well at the time as well, and ferrari and he needed the results after the string of bad races at the start, Kimi put in a great lap too, so MS was especially estatic in getting this pole, he knew he did the best job on the day.

I remember Bahrain 2004 as well, whether Michael set up his cars for specific corners, and made comprises in others, he locked up it seemed, and carried speed in, and I thought he has lost it, but he did some great recovery sectors in the rest of the lap, there's something to be said of recovery sectors, and hooking up those sectors, that was another good pole I remember.

No it shouldn't, because you can pick out any pole you want, from any driver, from the last race, this season, any season, anything, and talk about it.

Plus you got a thread in the racing comments about the worst drivers in f1 history, and that crosses many f1 seasons, so come on, contribute or don't, your choice.;)

Hakkinen did the same thing at Imola in 00(?) when he took the last second pole away from Schumacher after running a little wide in the chicane. If you look very closely under braking for rivazza 1, he gets sideways but holds perfect neutral steering and a four wheel drift into the apex.

I miss those laps so much, We hardly get to see any complete onboard hot laps during qualifying anymore since they all go at it at the same time. The sheer excitement of feeling like your riding with your favorite driver and holding your breathe hoping he just sticks to the limit instead of over-do it through the next corner.. and the next should be brought back.

Especially as it was a pole Häkkinen should never have taken. On his last attempt Schumacher was several tenths clear of his best so far after the second intermediate but he made some operational mistake in the double apex corner at the bottom of the track and aborted his lap which otherwise would have secured him pole.

this is Kubica on a damp to wet track in Monaco, from FP3. TV director should be shot for 1) not sticking to the onboard all the time and 2) cutting off to show us light changing from green to red. Like there wasn't an on screen clock at all times.

Schumacher was only 0.071s ahead of MH's lap of the time in the second intermediate and did not abort his lap but was 0.025s ahead at the finish line which MH then went on to beat by 0.091s.

Perhaps it was his third run..

Then Michael Schumacher looked set to take a strong interim pole position on his third stint, but just as he did in Brazil, the Ferrari driver headed straight into the pits before completing that lap. "I made a bad mistake at Rivazza on my third run," the German admitted later, "Up to that point it had been a very exciting lap - I was four tenths up."

I'm surprised. From what I heard about the Austria pole, Schumi did make a huge mistake and lose a lot of time. He then proceeded to drive the wheels of his car and reclaim the time.

btw Schumi apparently has a type of style where he gains front end grip by going heavy on the brake pedal - when he releases the brake he gets the front end bite, apparently there is a good example on this on one of his Malaysia pole laps.

Hmm? Before 1.10 he looks great. After that, all over the place. Defitenitely not the fastest way to go around S3. Few nice "saves", but...

I don't think trail braking is a just a MS thing...

In qualifying anything does go; the best drivers can drive it like a lunatic and get away with it, but have the brains to know they couldn't do it in the race. I guess in F1 they can't, but we usually set the car up to be stiffer in the rear (spring, geometry, damper etc) because the car will take it with the new tyres which breeds this kind of behaviour.

There is also tracks where the quickest way around in qualifying is with more oversteer than you would otherwise like (and with a balance you would never race with).

Absolutely great stuff.

There should be a rule in F1 that every time driver whines about traffic in his hot lap, he should be forced to watch this video with eye-openers on (the ones that were used to force Alex watch videos in clockwork orange).

Kimi was faster but ran wide in the final corner. Everyone but Hamilton-diehards knew it at the time.

I'll Attempt to make a list with some of my favourite qualifying laps....

Jacques Villeneuve -
Imola '99. An absolutely amazing series of laps he pulled off during the qualifying hour. Sadly I haven't found it on youtube.
Hockenheim and Monza '98.

David Coulthard-
Argentina '98. Apparently his best lap there was six tenths faster than what the simulator said was do-able.
Spa '96.
Monaco '01.
Estoril '95.

Mika Häkkinen-
Brazil '98.
Silverstone '01.
Suzuka '00.

Kimi Räikkönen-
Monza '05.
Spa '02. (Fantastic!) http://youtube.com/w...feature=related not his last and fastest lap, but nice to watch.

Mark Webber-
Hungary '03.

Michael Schumacher-
Monaco '96.

And this is only some of them.

It was built to move the detroit F1 race out of downtown but was switched to CART because they were willing to race for much less. Probably a good thing as it is hard to see F1 cars having much of a race there.

Or JV

You want to know why formula one is so boring now?" Jacques Villeneuve asks with a cool shrug and a rhetorical flourish. "It's obvious. There're no heroes in racing these days. It's nothing to do with the sport being one-sided and Ferrari winning all the time. It's just because there are no heroes. All these corporations don't want their drivers to ruin their image, so you can't say what you think. You're basically not allowed to have a personality. How can you have any heroes if you don't allow personalities?"

"....No," Villeneuve says tartly, "because in the paddock, Kimi tries to look one-dimensional. It's sad that you don't see drivers being real people. Kimi's image is so obviously fabricated because he's not the Ice Man. It goes back to the corporations. You end up fabricating this image because that's what they want."

Villeneuve, for one, is not expecting a dramatic championship battle this season. "It'll be the same as last year. It's just a corporate business - but it didn't used to be like this.

Interesting comments by JV. It is true all top level sports are full of similar stuff. Whether it´s F1 robots with sponsors caps or NASCAR drivers pretending to be good ol´ boys...it´s different but in the end, all the same.

Jacques is little bit wrong about Kimi, though. In his case, it´s more about press. He mumbles few words, keeps it brief and hopes they´ll leave him be. Also, I don´t think the Iceman image is desirable...especially at Ferrari.

Here´s another quote:

"I was born in the wrong era" - KR
