My old pal Chris Witty emailed me today with the following regarding Christopher Hilton's latest book project;

Christopher Hilton is about to start writing a book on the racing history of Toleman Motorsport and is looking to get hold any any photos, press packs, memorabilia, etc., etc, from the period 1976-1985. That covers Alex Hawkridge racing in an early Dunlop FF1600 Stars of Tomorrow series, Rad Dougall in FF2000, Colin Hawker's DFV-engined Capri and VW (which Chris Craft once drove), Terry Kaby rallying his Vauxhall Chevette, Mark Thatcher in a Toleman backed Golf GTi, Ted Toleman in an Osella at Le Mans before the moving into F2 with Walkinshaw and then the Ralts, et al. Anything relating to Toleman Motorsport.

I have nothing on file so I wondered if we could put out a request on TNF for help and assistance.

All info/pix can be emailed to Chris at hil2ton[AT]yahoo.com

I know he wants to use somewhere around 200 photos in the book which will be out early next year.

There must be plenty of stuff out there chaps! How about showing what you're going to submit here too, as well as emailing it/them to Chris H?

:)

Will the book cover the Benetton/Tolemans and the Renault/Tolemans, or just the Toleman/Tolemans ?

More seriously, it should be a good story, I hope it's up to the standard of his excellent Nuvolari book.

And even the Ferrari/Tolemans, perhaps . . .

Simply replace [AT] with the @ symbol Richard.

With regard to the book that Christopher Hilton is planning on the history of Toleman Motorsport, it will cover the period from the early days when Alex Hawkridge and the late Bob Toleman started racing in a pair of FF Royales before moving on up through the FF2000 period with Rad Dougall and onwards up until the team was sold off to Benetton in 1985. As a former employee between 1980 and 1985 I know there is a lot of interesting info out there and while our minds can recall those halcyon days reasonably well - a glass of Pinot Noir does help! - we are short on photographic evidence from the pre-Senna days. For example if any has a photo of Stephen South testing the F2 BP-backed TG180 prior to his 'sacking' by Alex Hawkridge in 1980, then that's the kind of "scoop" photos we're after.

A warm welcome - and not before time - to Chris Witty!

Unfortunately Chris Hilton's email address was incorrectly represented in my initial post. This has now been corrected; it should have read hil2ton[AT]yahoo.com (please just replace [AT] with the @ symbol when you use it).

Apologies to anyone who has sent material to the incorrect address - these messages will need to be re-sent.

From Christopher Hilton
Thanks, boys! The book will be arranged in chronological order so that it will end with the Toleman involvement ended and the team became something else.
If Alan Cox and RTH could e-mail what they are showing here I'd be happy to consider including it in the book. Equally if they'd like to give me the background to the pictures I'd value that, too.
And anybody else out there with Toleman anecdotes, you know where I am - and I'm in the market for them.
Thanks in advance.

must have pics from one of the very first test of the TG183, at Monza, on a very hot&sunny summer day (no team uniforms, everyone wears very casual, even before Benetton came in), made from the pit granstand, if I remember well the quality isn't first class, can try to look for them, if interested please let me know...

I've posted a few Toleman related pics of mine below - Colin Hawker's Capri at Ingliston in 1974 and some shots of Terry Kaby's Chevette competing in the 1980 Granite City Rally (shots 1 and 2) and the 1980 Jim Clark Memorial Rally (shots 3 and 4). I will email these directly to Chris Hilton but thought I'd post them here for general viewing also. ;)

Colin Hawker's cars were always beautifully made and presented as well as being competitive.
