I recently bought this 1967 911S:

I'd really like to speak to the original owner. All Porsche will tell me
is that the first owner was from Yarm.

It was unusual because it was a special order with rally and sport
options and a gearbox with "special ratio for airfield racing". I figure
it must have some race/rally history somewhere.

I'm hoping that somebody remembers this car from back in the day,
it must have been pretty unique at the time, here's what the original
colour looked like:

Bahama yellow, the respray colour of choice in 1969!
Presumably even those who might know of the car (I don't) would need a registration number (if not a chassis no.) to help them.

Andy:

Great car! You're in for some serious fun.

Airport gears were a factory option at that time, even in the U.S. (pre-smog daze), and a couple of friends here in Colorado ordered their new cars with it. I don't recall the exact gears, but my '65 912 has (stock) A, F, M, S, X. The thicker front bumper trim--if I recall correctly--was first seen on the 1967 S.

OK, I give up. Where's Yarm? Yarmouth?

Andy:

PS:

The wheels and headlights appear to be from later 911s but were common 1970s updates.

What seats does it have? Sport or rally? (A photo of them would be great.)

What other differences?

If you're in the U.S., you can get a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche Cars North America listing completion date, original eterior and interior colors, options fitted, etc. See their web site (can't recall the URL just now).

Hope it's not rusty!

Wheels are original size, they've just been refinished badly, should strip off ok,
up close I think look hand painted, uggh.

Airport gears for this thing were AA-F-J-O-S. I wouldn't mind getting in touch
with somebody with a geniune 901/52 gearbox, just to know what their serial
number looks like. I've been given the number but it seems too short, only 5
digits.

Chassis number is 308032S. I have no idea what the registration was.

Andy:

OK, Yarm's not far from where I was born: York.

Yes, the painted wheels fooled me. If they are 4-1/2x15, they're original. They can be refinished easily.

Your chassis number checks out; anything between 305 101 S and 308 523 S is a 1967 911S Coupe. An original Type 901/02 engine number would fall between 960 001 and 962 178. About 1,695 '67 S Coupes were made. They made only 483 '67 911S Targas, and I recall a fellow PCA member in Pennsylvania who had a beautiful Irish Green one. As a lowly 912 owner, I lusted after a 911S when they were new--powerful and light--but I later came pretty close with a 1970 911E.

PS:

Porsche made darned few RHD examples, but I don't know how many. Given sales at that time, I'd estimate well below 10 percent of the total.

And we had a name for that Bahama Yellow color that I can't repeat here!

It has sport seats, here's the full option list:

sport seats
100L fuel tank
airport gearbox
LSD
sport kit
rally kit
bahama yellow
black interior
RHD
14/Apr/67 build
25/Apr/67 delivered

It's pretty clear it was ordered to race.

Here's a picture of the seats, no houndstooth unfortunately:

As a long shot, I suggested to the poster via PM that it puts him up in Charles Lucas/Neil Corner/Hugh Ropner country. I recall Charlie Luke had a 911, later Sportomatic version,in period, Neil Corner always had good stuff, and the Ropner family had the superb 289 Cobra, so a 911 is not out of place in that company.
Perhaps someone at Darlington and District Motor Club may recall something of the car and its owner in period

I watched a lot of racing on local circuits -Croft and Rufforth - in late 60s and early 70s (and now live about 10 miles from Yarm ) but do not remember this car racing. But in my days as a start line marshal at Harewood hill climb I do recall a 911S of this colour.I will check my programmes and report back...

I worked in the Sales Dept of AFN Porsche Cars GB at Isleworth in 1967.
It was a long time ago but I think we sold your car to Gordon Durham, it is fixed in my memory because we took an Elan 26R in part exchange and I got to drive that on the road....I was 18!
Durham raced quite a bit in the North of England and the Elan was a well used racing car.
Think he raced the car at Croft.
I see from 192.com that there is a Gordon Durham, The Mount, Leven Road, Yarm, Cleveland, TS15 9JF. It may be a coincidence but seems to fit.

Just for info (and without taking this too far off topic), Yarm was where the shareholders in the Stockton-Darlington Railway Company agreed to build what would be the world's first passenegr-carrying railway. They signed the document in the George & Dragon pub, which apparently still exists, as does the town's imposing viaduct built to carry the railway.

The winner is Bill Harding. I spoke to Gordon's widow Lourna on the
phone 3am this morning (my time.) Lourna knew what the call was
about before I asked her, seems Gordon had a bunch of these cars
over many years, all with racing modifications. Somebody even
called her from Jamaica wanting to know about one of Gordon's
former cars.

He also owned Ferrari 250 GTO #4399GT and campaigned it at the Nurburgring in 1965,
although he was not the driver.

I had a picture somewhere of the Carrera you owned. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Graham Gauld once sent me this photo which he took of
Gordon Durham in the Carrera about to be overtaken
by Jackie Stewart.

The quote from Graham Gauld was that the photo was of Jackie Stewart doing
the overtaking.

Gordon Durham is in the Carrera, or so I was told.

Which car ?
The 356 Carrera has never been part of Mexborough collection and has only had five owners all known and now resides with Simon Draper.

Hi Andy,

It's been a while, but are you still looking for info regarding that gearbox?

I sure am. If you know or hear of a 901/52 type transaxle it's very likely it could be a match. Very few of them made. I have the serial number to confirm.

Yarm has another claim to motorsport fame as it features in the Road Book for many of the classic years of the RAC Rally - on the route into or out of the North Yorks forest stages, Ingleby being the closest.
