Does anyone know if it is possible to get a DVD copy of the complete Swedish Grand Prix of 1973? Preferably from a television broadcast.

Thanks a lot
Mikke

The Team Lotus/JPS video from the 1973 season, titled "If you are not winning, you are not trying hard enough" does feature quite a bit of footage from Anderstorp in 1973. Was the race televised live though? Somehow I do not recall that being the case, Monaco used to be transmitted live from about 1964 in continental Europe but not all Grands Prix were. The Swedish was, I seem to remember, not.
It did feature the King of Sweden taking time out for a coffee break, right in the middle of a pretty intense duel for the lead. A year later, the King was allowed to try the Vaskuststugan-sponsored "Batmobile" BMW pedalled by Rune Tobiasson....and managed to go off at the first corner...twice.

I cannot recall ever seeing any actual TV video footage of the race floating around on the internet. Most of the good quality footage from that era would appear to emanate from the German and Austrian channels.

The BBC showed highlights of the race on their " Wheelbase" motoring programme the week following the race.

I know this as it is the first GP race I can still recall in my somewhat muddled memory :|

Kind regards

Phil

I believe (from memory, usual disclaimers!) that the'73 Swedish GP was on a Saturday (?) and that year, the British coverage was on ITV.

No, it was a Sunday, I may be confusing this with the 1978 race, because of the imfamous Andy Marriot/Mario Andretti interview. I'll get me coat!

The interview that never happened! World of Sport had booked time from Sweden live, and as Mario stood waiting, Andy stood waiting, and in the studio in London, the director was screaming at the Swedish link director, who couldn't hear him, so after 20 minutes of screaming, Mario walked off! It has to be on YouTube somewhere. It's a lot funnier to watch!

Quite a battle:  Ronnie, Emerson, the Tyrrells and Denny's McLaren M23.

The infamous non-interview was shown on one of the early "It'll Be Alright On The Night" bloopers compilations. Mario waited so patiently, and my recollection of the footage is that the booked satellite time ran out just as Marriott was actually beginning the interview.

I've recently seen some TV footage of the Swedish GPs from 1976 (in black and white) and 1977. In both cases the broadcast appears to be from a single camera, which gamely tries its best to follow the cars around the entire circuit. The 1978 race would seem to be the first one that received proper TV coverage.

SVT broadcasted 1975 Swedish GP, the one in 1978 was last minute thing with ITV stepping up to set up cameras etc and do the broadcast to Eurovision. While 1976 broadcast was surely Eurovision one, I only saw short highlights of world feed and was unable to verify its origin, but it wasn't SVT as they decided against showing Swedish GP in 1976 due to tobacco sponsorship on cars. 1977 is a it of a myth to me, I also saw short highlights, but I am not entirely convinced if they were made for Eurovision. So while I believe that 1975 and 1978 broadcasts exist for 100% (well you can probably find 1978 on youtube and other places), 1976 might also exist, I don't think there will ever be a full tape of 1977 one uncovered (same thing goes for 1973 and 1974).
