I'm surprised! Never really touched this magazine - I always thought it was just about old classic cars and nostalgia but I was tempted to get a copy today and I'm glad I did. Lots of F1 news and articles - especially one on KERS and a brilliant 8 page column by the much missed (from Autosport) Nigel Roebuck. Also a really entertaining article about Nigel Mansell and his sons testing a Le Mans series car recently at Estoril. Anyway, just thought I'd pass on the tip to others that have steered clear! :)

Cheers mate, I'll definitely pick it up. I think I am going to ditch my F1 Racing subscription and go for Motorsport instead. Nothing personal about F1 Racing, but I don't think I fit their demographic anymore.

I might give it another go - until quite recently it was almost entirely focused on the historic scene and was repeating itself so often I was bored with it. They have had a bit of a rebranding (again) though which I've heard positive things about.

Everyone knows my particular f1 political proclivities and it's safe to say they don't exactly cohere with Motorsport's new editorial line. But the writing, the content, even the understated yet classy design all ooze quality and depth.

What they have achieved in the last 8 months has been superb and I subscribed because I thought it's now really the only grown-ups motorsport magazine going.

I first read MotorSport in the '60s, it is the only Magazine that I have now for racing news, it's an informative read, with great articles from the past and contemporary stuff too. Very difficult, but they have a good balance now and also have Simon Taylor (Lunch With) and Nigel Roebuck's column. You cannot beat it's culture, many years in print and long may it continue

I only got around to reading Motorsport afte its redesign and lengthy "bashing" thread on the Nostalgia Forums. I have always liked reading it. Funny thing is i've never bought it. I guess it's hard to justify $8 magazine.

The "bashing" stopped about 6 months after it escaped from Haymarket. We might be a bunch of old farts on TNF, but we know a good magazine when we see it. Three or four years ago it was a pile of steaming ****, especially in the much-hated "red cover period" and if it wasn't for the fact it seemed a pity to break my full set from 1948 to date I'd have given up on it.

Kar's right - it really is the only mag for grown-ups these days.

Long may it continue.

Hear hear!

I had stopped buying it. The May 2008 issue was the first issue I bought in over three years.

It's just refreshing to have a publication treat you like a grown up. Yeah Motorsport has gotten vastly more political of late, (Autosport, funnily enough, less so) but even if that bothers you there's just the sheer volume of quality writing to make up for it.

This is in stark contrast to F1 Racing which has - consciously or not - decided its readers must be morons with attention deficit disorder. It's rather nice that there is a magazine out there that as well as increasing its sales, is taking the novel approach of assuming its readership aren't illiterate cretins and can concentrate long enough to read sentences longer than five words.

I think they both work OK in tandem. Autosport goes up and down through the years but I still look forward to Thursday's for it.

Ahh, I see you're used to reading Peter Windsor's articles. Let me translate:

Refreshing. To have. Long Sentences!

they do - autosport is still very good for the latest news but just cant compete with the standard of motorsport's articles.
the problem with this for autosport seems to be that you can get the same news on the website for free

I get all of them but IMO all of the Haymarket publications are boring, bland and tell you nothing really.

SportsPro is the only magazine that I learn anything interesting from nowadays.

The Paddock is another boring and fairly pointless magazine.

It's a shame that F1 News isn't going anymore. It would be good to have a mainstream F1 mag that isn't published by the boring folk at Haymarket. :

I reckon F1 racing has improved a lot, the features are far better, it looks a lot better, only the prizes for the letters seem really out of place now. I think it's dropped all the bishopness.

As for motorsport, the photos are pretty damn good - those monaco ones in the last issue - awesome. And I forgot how much I missed roebuck's column. However, I just want to hear about current affairs to be honest. So I can't really justify getting that as well.

Hamilton in a silver and red McLaren. But you can't miss it on the rack - it's the one with a green masthead among all the red ones!

The Paddock, come on that's about Button's new plane or the latest watch with an F1 theme.
As to SportsPro isn't that a Tom -Liar- Rubython publication?

But on topic I'll stick to Autosport and Motorsport and the latter is getting better and better lately.

March 2008 was the first Motorsport I have ever purchased, and haven't missed one since now. Best read going around now, great mix of current and nostalgia. Is a little pricey, but the sheer size of it now justifies the price.

Ross:

Which one is The Paddock?

The Paddock was started about 18 months by an ex-BusinessF1 commercial guy with the express aim of outbusinessing BusinessF1. My information is that in that time it has changed hands once - with ownership going off-shore to some or other emerging country - gone through about five editors, left at least one journalist heavily compromised, and that the owners have now resorted to handing it out free to boost numbers and impress advertisers - even here they have battles, with most in F1 never even having heard of it.

All in, it appears to be another BusF1, but without the court cases on account of its softy-softy policy. Would I subscribe? Never in a zillion years - and I did to BusinessF1.

Back to Motorsport - in its latest incarnation it is certainly a cracking good read and well worth a sub or at least regular purchase.

Diluted in the sense that the issue I saw looked exactly like BusinessF1 in layout and design, but with lower production values.

In the sense of "View a low-bandwith version of this webpage"

I don't understand why folk here are so against BusinessF1/SportsPro. So what if some of the stuff is exaggerated or unprovable in court... the fact is there's probably loads of half-truths in there. I've just received the new issue of SportsPro and it's a cracking read.

Because the word 'half-truth' is a misnomer, a half-truth is not a truth in any respect at all.

Errr, do you not understand the disadvantage in reading inaccurate information? It's fairly important if you're writing a business article.

If that is your approach I think you'd be fine saving the cover price of Motorsport and simply read all the bullshit in this forum. I mean, there could be a half truth in there somewhere if you look hard enough... ;)
