This is truly one of the greatest F1 pics of all time.

I would agree that going by the image itself, ferrari turbo is one of the greatest f1 photos ever. It's immensely difficult to zoom the lens and catch the car in focus like that- that I would say alone is a one in a thousand shot by itself, using digital....but this was done using film, so no chance to do a few test shots first to get the settings right. Catching the flames as well really does make this a one in a million.

Those are some nice looking tyres on the Simtek.

Isn't that the year and car of a tragedy, as well?

That was the year Roland drove for them yes.

I agree, the timing is impeccable, the technique perfect, and the geometrical composition is not only great but novel with the tilt, but also balanced with the dark>light transition in the shot and where the focal point is against the flame of the exhaust. It satisfies all goals - documentary photography as well as artistic photography.

You can't see it from this angle, but the red-and-white design on the airbox (representing the Austrian flag) features the message "For Roland".

Minor quibble: I'd say the focal point is the F in FIAT not the exhaust. Which must have more or less been Schlegelmilch's intention as the focal point was established as that point on and above the track when the tripod-mounted camera was positioned and secured. Then it was a matter of getting the timing right enough.

Yeah I was not sure so I posted it anyway

It has been photoshopped.

Bit longwinded, but you need to cut the car into a new layer, apply blur to background then enlarge the car to cover the finging effect seen in that pic...

I'd be willing to bet that if we took a broad ranging poll of the absolute best F1 photograph of all time, that pic of the Ferrari 156 at Monaco would win. As others have said, it tics every box. I'll bet he giggled when he developed that one...

I could be mistaken, but it does look like the Ascari complex.

Variante Ascari is completely flat.

In the EVdP picture you can see a difference in height, typical of Les Combes.

Yes, it's the entry to the Parabolica.

His Royal Highness is right.

It's a classic shot of Monza, taken from the tower located inside the Parabolica.

What Henry and Gio said. When you look at hundreds of F1 photos, you start to recognise almost every common camera position. ;)

Here's a photo by Rainer Schlegelmilch from the same position:

OK, thanks. I'm impressed by the ability of those of us who can do that! I've looked at hundreds of pictures myself, and there is no way I can identify random bits of road without some other clues like background. I've edited the caption.

Parabolica is easy to identify because it's one of the very few corners (maybe the only one?) where photographers have an elevated position above the track. Also the aero pack helps.

Interlagos 2000?

http://img825.images...27/26912722.jpg

?

I'm fairly certain the first one is Silverstone 2000. The second looks like the Imola pitexit (compare to this photo from 2005), so that'd be San Marino 1999.

I could say the same thing for cars of 64-69 seasons and 88-95 seasons. :|
