Very true,Tony.Still had time to light a fag up and avoid any obstacles.0-60mph in about 2hours,top speed of 75-80mph(just about par for the course in those days).Handled like dream.Wish I still had it as it's probably worth a good few quid now, 

P.S.Didn't you race a Greeves in the Manx at one time?

Certainly did. Well competed in the Manx on one I don't know about raced!

 

It expired on lap 3 with a slipping clutch. The original clutch wasn't a great deal of good until it was changed to one off a Greeves Griffon with bronze plates.

 

I had bought an Aermacchi-Metisse 350 in early 1972 to run in the Manx but was persuaded by a racing mate who rode a Seeley Norton 750 that Formula 750 was the class to be in, so I traded it for an ex-works Tony Smith 672 BSA. Lost a fortune selling it when I wanted to buy an ex-Rod Gould TR3 after the 73 MGP so I couldn't afford it. Finished up with a Maxton replica TD2B.

 

Such is life - all the wrong decisions made at the right time.

A young Ron being introduced to the gentle forgiving.nature of his new TZ750 at an early Mallory meeting in 1975, I think from memory this was his first outing on the brand new 750, which Mal Carter had brought back from Daytona, and a broken collarbone was the result!!

The rider passing through is Roger Marshall, still with his Daytona number on his back.

I don't have any notes for this one Gregg, but the painting which he is being presented with is certainly depicting his MGP success.

I seem to recall it was some kind of award from Shell/BP, hence the logo in the background, didn't they used to hold some kind of 'man of the meeting' or 'man of the year' award in the those day's?

If anyone could ID the other chap it would help, it's many years ago now but I get the feeling the other guy was maybe one of the Shell/BP bosses?

Yes I think you are correct, I remember Phil won the Grovewood award around 1973.

Even without the names on the helmet I'd recognise that rear end anywhere! It's the shape of the cowl over the rear tyre that gives it away as the CAT Crescent.

I'm not sure if this has been up before?  Must be '72.  Cooper on pole is wearing his open face Bell rather than the pudding basin from the year before. Think I can spot Barry Randle. And weirdly it looks like Alan Barnett pushing his Yamsel from the back of the grid on the left. I think that's Joh Weedon and Rex Butcher in there too.  The bloke at the back right seems to be about to jump aborad a Drixyl framed bike, probably a Macchi.   Readie extreme left, front row?

I love pictures like that.  There was somehting about push starts that I really like (it helped that I was fairly good at them) but I think it's the anticipation when the grid went quiet, the waiting and then the silence being broken as the engines burst into life.

 

I agree that it's from '72 and will have to have been from one of the International races held at Brands and I think there were only two a year, either the pre-TT event in May or The Race of The South.  There are a couple of riders wearing pudding basins and those helmets weren't allowed in the UK from that year on, I believe exceptions were made for foreign licenced racers.
