What`s is the best, or most realiable, or widespread used engine simulation code today?

I`m aware of two options: GT-Power or Ricardo WAVE.

Wich one is best for simulate intake and exhaust interation?

Is Performance Trends Engine Analyzer Pro of any value?

Thanks

Even if you pick GT-Power or Ricardo Wave you get a good engine simulation software, personally I'm most familiar with GT-Power.

These simulation softwares are not comparable to softwares you can buy for a few hundred dollars.

Yes Engine Analyser is pretty good. It has its limitations but has always given me good results. I don't trust its absolute accuracy to better than about 95%, but for relative changes it's very good.

The Performance Trends stuff seem user friendly at least.

GT has the largest installed based in terms of seat licences, and is widely used among most automakers.

The "reliability" (by which I assume you mean the accuracy of simulations) is only as good as the modeling and the input data. As with anything, garbage in = garbage out. The underlying code of all the top software is based on sound physics, and after so many revisions, gotten a lot of input from users and technical experts in the field.

I use GT Suite 6.2b9 in my day job, but I also use EAP for my hobby work when I don't need or want the complexity of building up a complete GTM. Like Bill said, it's an adequate tool to determine relative differences, for example in designing a cam profile for the TDI engine I've been working on.

Another possibility (which I have not yet tried, but intend to as a less expensive alternative to the top-tier engine sim packages), is called Horsepower Lab. The website can be found at http://horsepowerlab.com/ While the interface is absolutely no-frills, like the other packages, it's also built up on a solid physics core, and that's the most important factor to me as a professional.

You might want to check out Lotus Engineering's engine simulator, the single cylinder version of which is free.

On the cheap there's Jon Schmidt's "Engine Designer". I know there is a lot of research behind it, but I haven't had occasion to use it since it was in early prototype stage.

As Greg says LES is well worth checking out. My friend used it for his final year project tuning inlet and exhaust primaries.

It seemed user friendly and had some nice options.

GT Power is by far the widest-used and is the way to go IMO. If you can justify the need for it, of course.

I have used AVL "Boost". The interface is a bit clunky but it has the advantage of interfacing with AVL "Fire" CFD SW which includes modules that are specifically tailored to handle problems related to internal combustion engine research and development.

Prof Gordon Blair's "Vitual Engine" is worth looking at. I haven't used it but it was highly recommended by someone I trust.

I was going to contribute something very clever, but as soon as you said 'carry on' it vanished from my mind. A bit like exam nerves. Any marks for course-work? No, I thought not...

My post looks naked and foolish now that you have removed the offending politicians (polite people).

LoL ! It's okay Gruntguru.

I like this forum because of the Title itself. It's a technical forum. I must assume that I can get more technical knowledge here.

I read the Engine Simulation. Thanks a lot for this.

Bumping this back to the top. I'm working on a hobby project for a TDI engine with a target of 200 HP/L and 40 bar BMEP peak using a novel turbocharging system. The simulation models are being done in GT-POWER. I have a thread here that documents the work being done.

That is, singularly, the sneakiest SPAMBOT I've ever seen on a forum. Each one of those posts is taken word-for-word from news source somewhere, or other interporn site. The post above was pulled the SAE site (http://www.sae.org/t...l/papers/981909), his point in the "engine warmup" thread was pulled from the Canadian government website (http://www.ec.gc.ca/...09FEF9-1_En.htm) and the post in the Overtaking thread came from here (http://uk.reuters.co...E52P2RN20090326).

Sneaky Sneaky Sneaky.

Finally got it, these guys are getting more innovative. I have deleted the posts Canuck;

I have always wondered if SPAM actually gets sales, especially something as sophisticated as this.

Maybe you should move this thread. It has been hit at least 4 times.
