I've never actually cried watching F1... but got very close to tears a few times. I've watched F1 since 1999, I'm guessing a few people on here watched Senna's fatal accident at Imola live.

I nearly cried in:

*Suzuka 2000 - Emotional for any Ferrari fan. My brother says I did cry... although I dispute that.
*Hungary 2006 - Although I'm not a fan of Button, I was so happy to see him finally win after years of trying. Also it was nice to see a British person at the top of the podium.
*Canada 2007 - Bad thing this time. First instinct when I seen Kubica's car stop was that he was dead. My hands like clambed (sp?) up together like OMG... is he alright... the way his helmet went just sent shivers down my spine.

Have you every cried (or nearly cried) watching F1?

Tears of joy hearing O' Canada played for the first time in a loooong time. As much as he got/gets bashed he made Dad proud.

1996 Suzuka Damon crossing the line I cried with happiness, Suzuka 98 for the same reason.

Monza 2000 cause I wasn't sure how people would be.

After that and Melbourne the next year when I heard people had died I cried

I never cried with F1 but almost did once, when I saw Badoer parking his Minardi in the pit entry during the European GP in 1999. He was in 4th place... That wasn't fair.

Never cried. But when Senna died i was at a birthday party watching the opening laps of the race. I was told later that i pretty much spoiled the party because of me being paralyzed.

Greg Moore's death struck me just as hard, but this time i didn't spoil a party.

Those two were the only drivers i did see having a fatal accident live on TV. So no, no other race was more shocking than those two. And i don't cry when i'm happy.

Nah, it's just a sport, not really worth crying over.
However I will say it was very moving watching Schumi hug Rubens after he won at Imola 2003 after his mother died. The man was clearly distraught.

Oh yes, no sport can make me cry like F1 can...some examples of when I have been tearful...

Adelaide 1986, when Nigel Mansell's Mansell's tyre shredded.

Imola 1994, when I saw Ayrton Senna lying motionless in his car. I knew there and then that he was gone.

Suzuka 1996, when Damon Hill crossed the finish line to become WDC.

And I felt like crying two hours after this year's Belgian Grand Prix... :(

Yep, almost came to tears once, it was this year, it was when Felipe blew his engine with two laps to go!

I was so frustrated, had to go outside and chop some wood!

The times I could have cried I was rather stunned and serious and silent and hoping for the best.

Imola 1994 I would have cried, but I was on the highway from Maastricht to Den Haag, having to stop exactly at 14.19hrs, having a strange nap with my head falling to this side and that side, at a highway parking lot.

I saw only in the evening after 22.00 on Dutch TV, what had happened. Then again, I first could not fully figure, as I don´t speak Dutch, but slowly the realisation sank in.

I cried Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday thereafter and felt very much at one with the many Brazilians.
Later, when I started travelling to Brazil in 1995, 1996 and 1997 (I lived there 1996-1997), I was told how traumatic the death of Ayrton Senna was.

When Michael announced his retirement. Really to me the only piece of quality commentating that James Allen has ever said. "yup he's going to do it, Michael Schumacher is going to set the fastest lap of the race in his last lap of f1" That just sent me off.

Aye. Sobbed my little 12 year old heart out when I got up early one sunday morning to watch the 1986 Australian Grand Prix and Mansell's tyre blew.. The tape ran out before the end of the race, but it was all meaningless by then..didn't know whether Piquet or Prost had won.. Someone let me know, I'm curious..

If I hadn't been all grown up and stuff, the '97 Hungarian Grand Prix would have upset me, but it all seemed to fit neatly into my world view that good things don't happen to good people..anti-karma. :stoned:

When the helicopter hovered over Ayrton Senna after they had got him out of the car. It was clear that he was either dead or very gravely injured, there was blood on the ground and they weren't really trying to resuscitate him.

Not floods of tears, but an intense emotion of loss and sadness.

The last 10 laps of the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix, after Alesi took the lead. I still get chills thinking about it.

When Berger won at Hockenheim in 1994, the first Ferrari win since Jerez 1990.

When Berger won at Suzuka in 1987, the first Ferrari win since the 1985 German Grand Prix.

When Berger and Alboreto finished 1-2 at Monza in 1988.

When Micheal Schumacher crossed the line at Suzuka in 2000.

All of these tears were tears of pure and absolute joy.

When Senna died, rather when it was confirmed he was dead, I basically lost control of my emotions for an hour. I cried like I had never done before, or since. I was crying so hard I could barely breathe.

Those weren't tears of joy...

Sure.

I cried when Senna died, I didn't watch that race live (thank god) but after I heard the news I spent all sunday evening absolutely stunned and frozen and all monday crying.

I cried in Hungary 06 when Alonso's wheel nut came loose. It was SO unfair since he was driving such a terrific race.

I cried in Singapore mid-race when I realized Alonso was going to win - don't know why really, it just happened. I guess I was sorta happy. :)

Good thread!

I cried when Mansells tyre blew in Australia 1986 and he lost the title - and I'm a Piquet fan (check the user name!). Still, I was only 15 and it was about 0430 in the morning UK time. Was such a shock at the time - wanted Piquet to win the title but not like that and he didn't win it anyway! Nevermind.

Next time I cried was at Silverstone 1987 when Piquet had led the whole race and Mansell chased him down and won - everybody else was cheering and I was in floods of tears! It's hard being a British Piquet fan!

Still, I might have cried loads when Piquet won his last race after Mansell had turned his engine off while waving at the crowd on the last lap of the Canadian GP in 1991. Tears of joy at last!

My next destiny with tears will be if Nelsinho doesn't get the second season he merits. Sure, he ain't been great in his debut season but he has always been much better in his second season in F3/GP2. Give the boy a break - for my pillows sake!

I cry every time Max opens his mouth...

seriously:
Moore and JV Sr. did it for me.

and when Heidfeld gave up the win to Kubica this year.
Good thing I like them both but Heidi desrved it more after all these years and so many podiums.

Hell no. That would be like crying because Hulk Hogan got beat - it's just entertainment. Your favorite driver/team losing/winning is not a reflection of who you are, just what you enjoy for entertainment. That's really all it is. The men/women participating know the risks, if they get hurt or worse I feel sad for their families, but not for them. It is a dangerous occupation, not anywhere near like it was, but more dangerous than chasing a white ball around....unless there's lightning.

Only once, and even then not during the race. It took a while to really hit me.

I never cried for any kind of result, good or bad. Though I shout at the tele sometimes, that's irritating enough for my wife. Especially if she's taking her usual nap after lap 10...;)

Not, but I did become irrationally upset and antisocial after some races and take it off on whoever was close to me.

I did cry when Brazil won the 1994 World Cup and the players opened a banner in tribute to Senna. I actually think that was the hardest I ever cried.

Everything stops for the race and theres lots of intensity with me but no tears these days, it takes a lot to make me cry.

I have only cried once and this was long after the race had finished. Inevitably it was Imola 94. I had watched the race live until the accident but didn't bother to watch it till the finish after then I didn't want to hear the news as it was inevitable what it was going to be. I tried to avoid the news all day and didn't find out till the back of ten when my parents had seen the evening news and came through to confirm that Senna really was dead. I burst out into tears and erm my mum had to console me. Horrible day.

The accidents of Moore and Zanardi hit me hard although I didn't actually see them on TV. However I think I had become hardened to the realities of the sport by then, when I was 13 (as I was at the time of Imola 94) I thought the days of people dying were gone and I would never have to witness anyone dying in a grand prix. Probably some fans believe this now and fingers crossed hopefully not but the danger is always there no matter how safe it has became, for one Kubica, Burti and Kovalinen are very, very lucky to still be around.

I will never forget suzuka 89, the low of the collision and the high of senna win and then the disqualification . I have never cried before and never after that even with his death. I was so devastated after they took the win from him, i can never forget. His death was horrible and i was very sad but suprisingly i never shed a tear but was very devastated for several months. Prost did not deserve to be champion that year...kind of funny seeing the stewards and their stupid penalties these days and they did not punish prost for an obvious deliberate crash.

Never cried. I was very very sad when Senna died., really upset and almost walked away from the grandstands in Canada 05 when Mclaren's mistake cost JPM a sure win with only 14 laps left. Montoya's win at monaco 03 and Brazil 04/05 were also vey emotional moments for me.
I scream the F word probably 100 times after JPM's drive-through at Indy 03 and probably 500 times more in the next race at Japan when his engine blew up from the lead giving up the constructors title to Ferrari.

Yes!

*In the evening after Imola 1994 when it was announced Senna had died.

*Schumi colliding with DC at Spa 1998. It broke me completely, he was so superior and it ended like that. I think I cried the day after too. I know that race is on youtube now, but I can't watch it even 10 years later.

*Suzuka 2000, tears of joy, finally Schumi won for Ferrari!

*Monza & Brazil 2006, the announcement of MS' retirement and his last fabulous race!

The latter still plucks at my heart strings.

Dad cried when jimmy was killed at Hockenheim. That time I was upset because he was. however since then I've lost count of the number of times I've shed tears either with joy sadness or excitement when experiencing racing.

No crying, but i felt very strange when Hakkinen cried in Monza'99, during the ceremony after Barrichello's first win in Hockenheim'00 and during the press conferance in Monza'00. They were very special and pretty emotional moments in recent F1 history.

And of course there is Nurburgring'99 for Badoer...

Didn't cry but Imola 94 chilled me to the bone. I remember watching qualifying and ratzenbergers crash, everyone was used to drivers walking away from accidents, not this time. It was pretty horrific to watch.
Senna was obviously disraught, I remember him going out in a track car to the accident. Little did he know.
I just found this snippet on wikipedia, don't know if its true.

When track officials examined the wreckage of Senna's racing car, they found a furled Austrian flag. Senna had planned to raise it after winning the race, in honour of Ratzenberger.

Watch this from 25 secs in http://uk.youtube.co...h?v=iYf1wDCIsIo says it all.

When Schumacher's engine blew in Suzuka 2006, and then when that tyre blew in Brazil. It was so sad.

Other times it was not 'tears', but it was such a complete state of joy, shock, extreme anger or disappointment, that no other sport ever got me close too (well, 2008 Men's final in Wimbledon came close, I've gotta admit).

After the qualy and then the puncture in the race Brazil 2006 looked like "it was not meant to be for MS to have a great final race". But then this was exactly why he had such a fantastic final race at the end. IMO that one race summed up his whole career, it was so fitting. It would have been a lot less memorable if he had taken pole and won comfortably.
