Hello!

I wanted to find out more about Red Hamilton. The only things I know:

- he was born on the 6th November 1921 in Illinois
- he didn't qualified for the 1953 Indy 500 (for which team with which car?)

More infos about him, career and personal?

He drove only at 2 AAA races in bhis career, Denver 1952 (16th) and San Jose 1952 (17).
In both races he drove an Kurtis Kraft Offenhauser for Dilion (also team/entrant name, or only sponsor?) - as at his try to qualify for the 1953 Indy.

Hello HistoryFan,

I find in the french book from Christian NAVIAUX and Jimmy PIGET, that Red HAMILTON was born in DECATOUR / ILLINOIS the 6th november 1921 and dead the 23th november 1986 (no place)
For 1953 in INDIANAPOLIS he drove a :
KURTIS KRAFT 4000 Offenhauser
4 cylinder
entrant by Clide DILLON with n#91
result : no qualified (too slow)

That's all Sorry :(

William "Red" Hamilton was mainly a Midget driver, he was 1948 SLARA (Saint Louis Auto Racing Association) Champion, and was a regular in AAA and USAC Midget competition throughout the fifties. I have only one win for him, 1952-05-23 at Kokomo (IN). The same year he was 65th in points, his best result.

Apparently spurred on by this success, he took a stab at Big Car racing, first with the Glessner/Offenhauser at Du Quoin (IL, 1952-09-01, DNS, too slow), then with Clyde R. Dillon's Kurtis/Offenhauser at Denver (CO, 1952-09-28, 16th) and Phoenix (AZ, 1952-11-11, retired). He took the same car to Indy in 1953, but failed his "rookie test", following which he concentrated on Midgets again.

Edited to say that he qualified 5th (!) fastet at Denver, a race for which two future Indy winners failed to qualify fast enough to gain a start, so he was not without talent.

Hamilton's real name is Robert and he was born in 1926 (10th June), not 1921. He is still alive.

I've corresponded with him a couple of times, he's a very pleasant person and appreciative to be remembered.
