which relates to a less than memorable car ad on TV, I was reminded of rival TV campaigns by Holden and Ford in the mid-late '70's.
IIRC, Holden trumpeted their new 'radial-tuned suspension' equipped models in ads featuring Peter Brock and Bob Morris? negotiating a slalom course at 'high' speed at Lang Lang (GMH's test track).
Ford's advertising agency countered with an almost identical ad wherein Allan Moffat drove their latest model Falcon similarly through a slalom course but, instead of marker cones, it was composed of current racing drivers standing there in their driving suits! Now, I can't remember all those present but Freddy Gibson's beaming Gomer Pyle-esque countenance is somehow etched in my mind! Shazam!

I think Allan Moffat was one of the 'markers', actually.

Others were Colin Bond, John Goss, Fred, Murray Carter and Garry Willmington. Because that's about all the folks that were driving Fords at a high level in Australia at the time (due to the absence of decent factory support, supposedly). IIRC, Bo Seton drove the car.

That ad I like best is the Shell ad from a year or two back...

Thanks for the correction, Bruce.
Upon reflection, Ford would naturally have preferred to have its no1 driver prominently on display as first (or last) marker rather than obscured behind the wheel.

Speaking of AM, here's one of many ads he featured in on Oz TV, this time for Mazda.

Not really memorable, except for some shots of Bathurst.

Now, back in his days in the Coca-Cola sponsored Trans-am Mustang there were no doubt several TV ads for the soft drink maker featuring that combination.

Does anyone remember one with footage from Calder Raceway, IIRC?
It was most memorable for the fact it was a rare 'co-branded' commercial and for the two products advertised.

Give up?

The catch phrase/jingle went something like, "When Moffat and his Mustang get together it's like Bacardi and Coke!"

I can imagine a current re-make of that ad, if allowed, would be plastered across the bottom with health warnings and disclaimers from go to whoa!

There was also a Holden Torana ad - "When you're hot, you're hot..." that featured some of their motorsport conquests.

I recall an Amoco T.V. advert from the early 70's, had a F5000 driving around the Manly-Waringah Expressway, was a black one, might have been Warwick Brown, don't recall.
I was working at the North Sydney Travelodge building site at the time, everybody downed tools and watched the Lola roll past many times, as the camera car, an EH wagon, shot the footage through the open tailgate! Very strange seeing a car like that on city streets, but not racing, "Just touring", as Murray would say........John

If we`re on an Australian theme, there were the memorable Shell commercials with Dick Johnson and Barry Sheene.. The "what would I want a sock for?" line from Barry Sheene became a bit of a common saying after those adds.

Ive always wanted to see the Senna Shell comercial, where he drives into a Service Station in a McLaren MP4/something ( or maybe it was an NSX ) wearing a tuxedo.

When did he sell his Ford dealership? :drunk:

Jack was doing Goodyear ads when Holden and Ford were trying to out-handle each other.

Also the Wayne Gardner Honda CRX up on 2 wheels TV ad from the 90's was'nt bad. Directed by a mate of mine at the time, Paul Martin
from Lintas in Sydney. Quite clever.

Phil Hill did a Shell commercial in the early 1960s (in black and white) driving a 250 California Spyder or a PF Spyder, not sure which. I think the commercial was extoling the advantages of an additive called Techrolene....

I can also recall (vaguely!) a b/w ad from the mid 60's (maybe 1967) with a a racing Alfa GTV interior shot going under the bridge at Surfers at race speeds (one of the Mildren cars?), a big Healey and a Lancia in a night cityscape. Can't remember what product was being flogged but it had a catchy jingle. Anyone remember it?

Not the one that stuartbrs is yearning to see (and which, I have to confess, I don't recall), but another stylish effort from Senna and Shell, nonetheless.

I remember another advert Hunt did, possibly for tyres? He and another chap are getting into their respective cars (fancy car for James, tarted-up grey porridge for the other guy) and glaring competitively at each other. They start up, and Mr Average zooms off in smug triumph while James is stuck with a puncture(?)

Doesn't anybody else remember the advert for tea that featured JYS?

I like a nice cup of tea in the morning...

It was pretty crummy, but memorable.

I could swear I remember a Goodyear tire commercial from the 70's featuring Enzo Ferrari . I can only speak to it airing in the US , as it was aimed at the US market .

You could see a Ferrari being driven on the highway with the narrator saying something along the lines of "Enzo Ferrari insists all his cars sold in the US to have GoodYear tires" , and at the end you see Enzo either sitting in the car or standing beside it saying something in Italian .

Anyone else remember that ? I've been accused by others of being daft when I mention it .

Returning to the dim and distant I remember the 30 odd seconds of SCM driving a Rob Walker Cooper T51(?)around Goodwood for MURRAY MINTS, THE TOO GOOD TO HURRY MINTS for an ad that appeared in 1959 or 1960.

Pity modern ads are not so short and to the point.

Can I sully this interesting thread with mention of possibly the worst ever 'motorsport' TV advertisement?

Not even sure which product it is, but it's a headache tablet, and a female pit crew member is suffering so badly that she is incapable of functioning in her obviously vital role, as the teams driver battles for the lead in his BMW 3 series racer. It's neck and neck at speeds approaching 40 mph, round some mocked-up circuit, until she pops the pill. Her miraculous and instant recovery then allows her to press the magic red button on her pit computer, and surprise surprise, her driver races away for the 'win.
Total inane twaddle.
IIRC there is a similar one, with the same female driving a helicopter, and pressing another red button, but I have no idea of the purpose or result of this.
Thank heavens for the remote control.
I wish all our readers a peaceful and happy 2009

The ad was shot at Oran Park with Moff, Fred Gibbo, myself, and a couple of others...maybe Gossie. I seem to recall that there was a kerfuffle just before the ad was completed on the day when one of the stars demanded additional payment "in cash" before he'd do another shoot since the ad had gone overtime...
