Hi,

Earlier this evening I was watching a repeat of the Mille Miglia programme on the Beeb when my wife (who is Italian) mentioned that her Grandfather had driven in that race during the 50's. She doesn't know much of the history of that side of the family, so the details are vague but she says he was called Marino Marini.

Well, just out of curiousity I stuck the name into google and came up with a few links about someone by that name having co-driven a Paolo Marzotto in a number of races. I couldn't find any specific details about Marino Marini but there were a few bits and pieces about the Marzotto family - one of which was a thread on this forum.

So, I was just wondering whether any of the members here might know any information about Marino Marini at all?

A long shot, I'm sure. Thanks in advance.

Happy new year to all

Cheers
Ian

Ian,

I don't know any information about Marino Marini, but this link might help:

http://www.bagliodip...a/dovesiamo.php

Apparently, Baglio di Pianetto is a wine that Paolo Marzotto produces. If you contact the "Uffici" (Offices) in Vicenza, they might put you in touch with Paolo. Apparently he lives in Vicenza.

The last five photos on the following webpage show Marzotto/Marini in Ferrari 250 MM 0254MM in the 1953 Mille Miglia. One shot shows them at the start, with, I believe, Marini smiling. The last ones show them fighting the fire which put them out.

They also refer to Marini as "...'Zignano' (Capitaine Marino Marini)..."

There is also a very good book, which I have still to buy..., on the Marzotto brothers and their exploits with Ferraris. It was reviewed very well. Perhaps there are more photographs there.

Ian,

There is quite a bit of reference to Marino Marini in the book La Saga dei Marzotto.

Marini was 15 years older than Paolo Marzotto, who was born in 1930, but they became close friends.

It is mentioned that Marini was a flying ace and 'known' in Rome. He is characterized as a great smoker and a great worker. They shared an interest in motorsport.

Still a young man Paolo joined the Marzotto company and he had Marini join as well. Marini was highly regarded by Paolo's father, Gaetano Marzotto.

There is a listing of the races that the Marzotto brothers participated in, and Marino Marini was co-driver to Paolo in 12 races from 1950 to 1954.

There is a good picture of the two taken after the 1952 Giro della Calabria on page 99

Jan

Thanks to everyone that has replied so far.

I have to say that I was (and still am) pretty dubious about whether they might have been one and the same person. I'm not sure how common a name Marino Marini is. However, some of the other details that we know do correspond with the information Jan gave.

I think I might have to track down that book and take a look. And thanks also to Vince for the suggestion about the wine. I'll see if I can make contact that way. Or at the very least buy a bottle!

Thanks again

Well, there was an Italian bandleader of that name - I believe one of his hits was big in Syracuse towards the end of 1955
And there's also the famous Italian sculptor of the same name

Hello,

How is your or your wife's knowledge of Italian? A google search for Capitano Marino Marini will answer your questions. A summary is in www.eaf51.org/newweb/Documenti/Storia/132NordSud.pdf ,page 22.
In brief, Marini was an WWII ace pilot with the Italian Air Force He became leader of the Buscaglia Squadron of torpedo planes and in June 1944 planned the torpedo plane attack on the Royan Navy in Gibraltar.
After the war he was employed by Marzotto and died in 1959 from an "incurable illness".
Another good link for his wartime exploits is http://www.storiain....um78/artic4.asp

R.I.P. Paolo. A driver that I admired as a lad. Marino Marini by he way is featured in the Editore Nada book 'La saga dei Marzotto' one of the superb 'Racing Lives' series.

Sad news, just verified from Italy.  What a fine and influential racing family they all were...Paolo, Giannino, Umberto, Vittorio...
