Did the thundersports ever get there? (shame if not - with you having all that archived footage)

Although I have had these pictures for some 20 years, only just noticed the race numbers. 72 for the Lotus and 23 for the McLaren

Have to say most of Peter's shots border on the magnificent :)

In this case however the idea was to illustrate how the Foulston Lola totally dominated the landscape ( As well as most of the races ) from whatever angle it was viewed from

Here is one of the lesser known Thundersports contenders, the Ginetta G29-Mazda. Its main claim to fame is that it is by far the noisiest car I've ever heard - see the chap in the background, and that's with it only ticking over!

The most vivid I have was sitting next to Tim Lee Davey's wife in the Brabham centre during the 1985 European GP, when about 10 laps in to the Thundersports race TLD came under the bridge at Clearways whilst leading and the rear bodywork/wing flew off sending him skyward and luckily landing on top of the debris fencing rather than the wrong side! Mrs Davey understandably took a while to calm down from this....

From fellow TNFer Jeremy Jackson, I got a big task...

I would like to have some help to identify the drivers featured in the photos from the Thundersports practice/qualifying session at the Birmingham Superprix in 1986.

I can see John Foulston in his red/white helmet in his Lola T530 but that's all I know!

Thank you.

There was a mysterious T530 which made one short appearacne at Castle Combe around 1984 in the Libre series. The drivers name was unfamiliar and so hasn't remained in the old memory banks. The car was the same colour red as Foulston's car but had no signwriting. It either retired very early or conked out in practice and it never reappeared as the rules for the series soon outlawed sports cars!

Who's car was it??????

Well after a bit of luck I managed to stumble upon some scratchy little 110 negs that I had forgotten about and there amongst them was.....ta da!

Alan Fowler's ex Foulston T530 HU1 (as kindly identified by Allan Brown) at Combe in 1984 !

I have no recollection of even taking the photo....not that I took many at this time , being unemployed 17 year old during the last-but-one recession with no money for film - the single set of negs covered Thruxton, Combe, Prescott, Shelsley and the remains of my Mk3 Cortina after it rolled itself into a ball of scap...

I always think of these Lolas as massive yet here it looks quite compact.

One more shot from the same set is the Bartlett Lola T610 at Thruxton.

Robin Smith and Ian Flux at Brands Hatch in June 1987.

Can it really be 23 years ago already????
The cars don't look that old really - or maybe it's just me? And they were already 'out of date' at the time!

When you work it out, 23 years prior to this photo and these two drivers could have been battling it out in Ferrari 250 GTOs or Aston DBZs.
Now that would have seemed a suitable technology gap for the passing of two decades plus somehow. :drunk:

I hope no-one will mind me resurrecting this glorious thread; I was pondering where John Foulston's Lola T.530 is now: I see what appears to be a 2015 auction listing on t'interweb but is it racing anywhere? I'd love to see that wonderful, gorgeous machine in action again. As others have said, it was beautiful beyond belief!

According to ORC the Foulston car was chassis HU10. It was owned in 2015 by David Brazell in Towcester, and was in an unassembled state at that time:

The Foulston T530 was up for sale last year I think.

Does anyone have any contacts or possibly have the official timesheets of the Thundersports Heat 1 and Heat 2 qualifying sessions at the 1986 Birmingham Superprix?

Thank you.
