Does anyone have an entry form for the Redex International Trophy race at Brands Hatch which took place on August 31st 1965. It was a GT and sports car race supporting the Guards International Trophy.

Autosport previewed the race in its 27th August issue entitled "Big bangers invade Brands". The main race was the Guards International Trophy, to be run over two 30 lap heats. There was also to be the British Eagle International Trophy race of 20 laps for Formula 2 and Formula 3 cars, and the 20 lap Redex Trophy race for Grand Touring cars. In the text it says "No fewer than five Shelby American Cobras head the list in the 20-lap grand touring car event; Jack Sears in the Willment car, Bob Bondurant in the Chequered Flag entry, Autosport's scribe Paddy McNally, Nick Granville-Smith and a Radford Racing entry with driver to be nominated. Two TVR Griffiths will be making their international racing debut, having recently been homologated, while there are four E-type Jaguars."

My particular interest is the TVR Griffith mentioned above and driven by E.H.M Paul. He was definitely there because I have a photograph of his car in the race.

I am trying to establish whether the race was run under an international, or national permit. The main races were certainly international and my memory of similar events in the '70s was that the meeting carried the status and it wasn't possible to have national and international events on the same day. I could be wrong, so if anybody has any information about this or the particular event, I'd be most grateful.

I was there Sterl, although very young, only 6 years old. I recall watching from the pit straight next to the Grovewood suite. My most vivid memory is Jimmy stuffing the Lotus 40 into the Clearways bank. I can't remember anything of this Redex race. Not sure if this programme is one of my Dad's old ones or one I have acquired along the way. Here is Jack in that race, one of his photos I scanned for him for his RAC talk.

Great shot, end of South Bank, where I was standing, notice the lights on the roof (for identification?) at Le Mans, Daytona maybe? What a beautiful beast this car is

From memory, does the programme cover feature Jimmy in a Lotus 30?

During our conversations on the way to and back from the TNF film show, Richard Styles reminded Jack how one of those roof lights used to flash twice as fast as the other in the 1964 Autosport race that Jack won in the fog, albeit in the 1964 Willment car. That was the Willment Coupe's debut Jack said. He won that race easily as he knew Snetterton so well, even in a pea-souper having done several 24 hour runs around there for the Commander's Cup or LM testing. Thinking about it, not my Dad's programme as it is not his hand writing.
Yes Jimmy is on the cover in the type 30, car no 55 in a Silverstone photo, looks like Becketts.

Andrew,It happens all the time .I gave Jack a few a couple of years ago. It was taken by Evan Selwyn-Smith. He did a lot of work for the BRSCC in the 60s. Good photographer unfortunatly he died about 15 years ago. His collection is safe here in Gloucestershire.

We are, but we take turns to handle the task. Thanks for everybody's help thus far.

Still looking for an entry form for that Brands race on August 30th though. We have the programme and the results but it's the entry form that is the important thing. I kept a lot of mine which probably says something...

I give up with the TVR guys - I gave programmes, period road tests and photos proving certain things and I have provided them to a certain gentleman last year (with no thanks) and then got told off by a rival TVR builder for trying to help and it sounds like Ted might have done a similar thing.

If there is such an issue then someone should take a lead on it (the MSA - MP??) and I hope people stop blaming two certain people for various things as their car wasn't a works car per say (and if they are blamed then talk to the guys who build "modern" cars with their input) but Sporsts GT cars were a little different back then as I'm sure we'll agree.

This was my 1st opportunity to see Group 7 "Big Bangers", including US drivers, in cars that make the ground shake

It was the most powerful grid ever seen in the UK up to this time. That two part Guards Trophy Gp7 race can now be re-lived with the recent Duke video DVD release 'Big Bangers at Brands'. Great colour film, good sound, made by the owners of the Guards brand at the time.
I got mine from play.com, very inexpensive ( which wrongly has it as 1966 on their listings ), but available from Duke here:

Here's some Pathé footage of the Guards Trophy, the Lolas and McLarens looking exquisite. Jim Clark's Lotus in the bank. The Brands film is followed by some entertaining footage from Hednesford; this becomes a horror show when they start racing on the figure-of-eight track! Are you watching Hermann Tilke?
