When I first joined in the same year (Sept. 2008), I tried to assist with some race results from my 1953 and 1954 Automobile Year's and Don was immediately all over me for posting inaccuracies - records that I trusted within AY. I didn't do much more of that unless I was 100-percent positive as to not incur the wrath of senior members.

I quickly learnt to include sources when posting results etc. I also learnt that a lot of the waspish replies were born of frustration rather than malice.

Uh, did you not see Automobile Year? I write for a living, I included my source then and, if applicable, every post since.

Exactly the same thing happened to my Sister and her Husband when they visited Quebec about 5 years ago,no happy ending as the Waiter refused to talk to them in English and they ended up walking out and as they left he gave them a spray in English, probably a isolated case but gee, bad for Tourism.

That's Quebec for you.  Such is the linguistic issue in Canada that many Quebecois will simply refuse to use English to make their political point.  The trick is to speak a bit of French but making it clear that you are British or Australian or whatever visitor and NOT an Anglophone Canadian, and then the Quebecois are as friendly, hospitable and warm as  other North Americans.  They will even miraculously start speaking English.

I won't claim that what you described never happens, because it does. But it's possible to overstate it, and you have. Episodes of animosity stick in the memory and make good news headlines, but they are the exception rather than the rule. I speak as an anglophone Canadian who has visited Québec many times, lived there for several years, and currently lives right across the river.

My experience on the matter dates back to many, many years .....in fact, to a North American road trip in 1978 which included driving all across Canada, from Quebec to Vancouver ....and I soon found out that once you'd crossed the boundaries of Quebec, it was important to let the natives know that you were french from France, Europe, and not Québécois, if you wanted to avoid frowning upon and poor service ..... but that was a long time ago.

To come back to the point of this thread, I don't visit TNF as often as I used to mostly due to allergy to the new software, but for me too it was my first introduction to meeting fellow enthusiasts through the internet and I keep very fond memories of the time spent here - despite the occasional rap on the knuckles by , for instance, a very notorious personality who was upset that I would wrongly consider a "rallye" driver as a "racing" driver ..... but the Motorcycle section in particular has been a blessing to me, leading me to get to know personally and meet in real life some of the guys I was watching in awe from behind the fences when I was a teenager .... and that is really priceless.

I'm resurrecting this thread to celebrate my 10th anniversary on TNF..... where has that gone?!?!

The forum seems to have come full circle over that period and is a lot nearer to the DC days, having lost a lot of it's popularist element to other more specific forums and even more specifically social media where the posting of images does not present the challenges experienced here.

I don't post here very much at all these days for the above reasons, but I still visit regularly and have made many friends here in the last ten years (and notably a couple of foes....!!!) for which I am very grateful. Also, little did I realise that joining TNF would be the catalyst for me getting on-track myself in my 50th season involved with our sport!!!

Here's to the next ten years! Happy New Year to you all!!!

I expect that many of us are waiting expectantly for the diatribe from Don, mainly telling you that you're wrong...

Happy 10th Anniversary!

The Missus must surely be asking why you're wasting it on this lot instead of taking her to dinner, though. ;-)

And Who Knew Mr. Coulthard was part of our origins, Wow! (double wink, triple if you prefer)

Seriously, thanks for the sentiments. Always a pleasure, Mate!

Edit: And Yes, something really should be done about photo posting! I checked in on a tiny, formerly local-to-me karting forum yesterday. Someone asked for a photo. Fear ensued. Saw a camera icon, tried it, was shocked it showed up two seconds later. A miracle. I wept.

Nice to see you still use the Giraffe Avitar that Kingsley Rob and myself cooked up all those years ago.

I still pop in on occasions but no where near as much as I did in the past. The software update kind of killed it off for a lot of us who we already a bit fed up...and it hasn't been fixed!

It's good to see that many of the old names are still around and who have an awful lot of knowledge to share (if they want to).

I've made some great friends through this site, so have a lot to thank it for :)

Congratulations Tony, thanks to TNF I was fortunate enough to run into you at Goodwood early one morning many years ago, I recognized your name "Giraffe" on your shirt when walking past you!.

The time goes by much too quickly; in looking, September will mark my 10th anniversary of joining also. A month later  Michael Argetsinger contacted me in regards to my childhood Mark Donohue association as he worked on "Technical Excellence At Speed". He literally changed my life for the better in so many ways. For that, I'll always be grateful for TNF.

Tony,

Best wishes on your 10th here. I still treasure the 10th/TNF shirt from our visit at Silverstone, which is some years ago now.

Best Regards,

Don

My 10th anniversary is coming up in around 10 days (and only two suspensions in all that time)!

Despite the detractors and decline in submissions it is still the most sane of forums to visit and comment. I say to my fellow TNFers, contribute more not less - it is an oasis that should be cherished and encouraged to flourish.

I expect that many of us are waiting expectantly for the diatribe from Don, mainly telling you that you're wrong...

To paraphrase that great nautical hero, Popeye, "It yam wot it yam."

Or to quote The Poet, "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Life goes on...."

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop to look around once in a while you could miss it.” – Ferris Bueller

Or as Jerry Garcia observed in "Truckin'," "Lately it occurs to me, What a long strange trip it's been."

Those who have stuck around for years on TNF should be very proud of what they have achieved. You have done well. Credit where credit is due, keep up the good work.

Motor racing has taught me to 'Watch The Mirrors', however, the occasional glance at 'The Rear-View Mirror of Life' can be rewarding. ;)

Purely in the interests of gratuitous points scoring, I would point out that the lyrics of Truckin’, like most of the Dead’s songs, were written by Robert Hunter.

Yeah, but it was Jerry who uttered them, wasn't it? Always difficult to attribute correctly - who ghostwrote for Popeye???

I believe J. Wellington Wimpy submitted Popeye script ideas anonymously.

Absolutely correct, with several others apparently contributing in some fashion according to the credits that were given for the song. It was just that Jerry always seemed to be the lead for the song when it was performed at The Dead concerts.

So we spent a day in a friend's lovely Volvo truck a couple months ago. Came into a little town called Chester, in Illinois. Popeye statues, stores, and things everywhere. Turns out it's his birthplace.

Had a spinach and cheese omelet. I then lifted my friend's truck when he got a flat tire.

The End

Santa Monica, California also has claims in the Popeye origin story, since it's where Segar spent the last ten years of his life. Popeye's first appearance came a year after Segar moved to Santa Monica.
