Note to anyone planning to go to these autograph sessions, understand that the times are VERY limited.
In Melbourne, each team had about 25min. Not all drivers show. Yes, there were lots of disappointed fans. Schedules change, in some cases, hour-by-hour, as organizers adjust to team and driver commitments. For example, McLaren was not even on the original schedule in Melbourne. Finally, the tifosi are a dedicated bunch and will camp out all day for the chance of a Ferrari driver autograph. Plan accordingly.
Parents, please don't pimp your kids out for these autograph sessions. As you would expect in laid-back country like Australia, security was super relaxed in Melbourne. I saw one family that had happily set up camp chairs inside the roped-off autograph queue. They would then send up their children individually in the queue (so the parents+children got multiple opportunities for the same sessions). If the kids made it into a signing, the parents would pass up racing memorabilia and yell directions at them: "NO!!! NOT THAT ONE!! ON THE RIGHT!!!" From the confused looks on their faces, it was obvious the kids had absolutely no clue who these drivers were or what the hell was going on. Unfortunately, it appeared that this routine had been going on for the entire afternoon. For some reason, these autograph sessions can bring out the worst in people.
Even if you have no interest in an autograph, you may still find it worth while to check it out. The drivers are interviewed during these sessions from time-to-time. Even if the questions are useless -- many were unfortunately in Melbourne -- the drivers are usually relaxed and you get some un-guarded moments despite all the PR people hovering around.
