As title sponsor or ? What would we consider the first year that Marlboro became Ferrari's largest or title sponsor?

Roger Penske could conceivably do it, I wouldn't put it past him at the very least.

It's another reason the 'seventies were great; the rumours! Which back then tended to start around Monza - merely a few months preceding the season being speculated about...

;)

checked out 'bernie's game' this afternoon - it appears that the initial conversations between Marlboro(represented by Pat Duffeler, a european director and well known in the f1 scene at this time), Ken Tyrrell and Emerson took place before the 1973 brazilian gp, which is interesting because at this time JYS had not made his decision to stop driving at the end of the year. nor, it appears, was he part of the conversation.
emerson, who had just won the argentine gp, was presumably already looking at his options if the arrival of new team mate Ronnie Peterson created 'local difiiculties' in Team Lotus... Likewise, BRM's no.1 team that year, BRM, had just started the Argentine GP from pole position (Regazzoni) and led the race! SO a lot of people in outwardly comfortable positions appear to have been hedging their bets from a very early date..

It appears that discussions with Tyrrell didnt go much further - we dont know why but it must have been quite difficult to fit JYS into this scenario - and the focus shifted to either McLaren or Brabham. At this stage neither if those teams had produced their 1973 cars which would ultimately make both - but especially McLaren - look so attractive for a future sponsorship arrangement.

Initially the rumour with the most momentum was that he'd take it to Tyrrell, but as we all now know McLaren was the resultant berth and he duly won the WDC.

Poor old BRM. Not only did they lose Yardley to McLaren, Marlboro, possibly the biggest sponsor in F1, jumped ship as well!

Hi Tony - sorry, only just seen this.

No, it was the black hat and cape sticker - black (filled in) with 'UOP Shadow" underneath.

Wish I still had one...

Wish it was still the seventies!!

Oooh, similar. How best to explain?

Erm, black on white - so opposite to what we see here - and without the car silhouette in the middle. (It was from the DN1 days). But round in shape.

Jody's overall was "owned" by a chewing-gum whereas Gilles was sponsored by tiles, helicopters and wine.

Indeed so; Scheckter's Brooklyn gum deal was pretty much all-encompassing, while Villeneuve had Giacobazzi, Ceramiche Piemme, Vespa (IIRC) and quite a few others - plus many non-overalls/helmet endorsements. His spat with PM/Marlboro is a good story, described well in Gerry Donaldson's book. In a nutshell he asked for more money than they were prepared to pay and deliberately left the area on his overalls where the MWCT patch used to be completely free of logos - check-out the '81/2 photos - in order to wind them up! A kind of 'this is where you could have been' deal!

If I'm not wrong the MWCT ended in 1996 too because of the financial commitment with Ferrari, I suppose.

[Marlboro Team Ecuador] The Ron Dennis-Marlboro "first contact".

Correct on both counts!

Yes, as McLaren's title sponsor.

The first year Marlboro logos actually appeared on the Ferraris was 1983, but the official Ferrari team name didn't incorporate Marlboro until 1996 AFAIR. I think the Marlboro logos arriving on the car's flanks coincided with PM undertaking to pay the drivers' retainers...

Sounds like I need to read that book after all! It never appealed - rather like the bloke himself - but if it contains anecdotes of that nature I will reappraise the situation...

a lot of it it isnt really a biography at all - emphasis on the 'game' rather than the 'bernie'..

What year was the unfortunate crash where Sir Frank was paralyzed? I can't believe Peter Windsor walked away unscathed, and Frank was hurt so terribly. If my memory serves me correctly, it happened at Paul Ricard, right?

BJB: So, Peter, this is some sort of new tweak?

PC: Yes, Barry, it's called a "wheel". By casting two of these dies together, welded across the straight edge, I hope to make the car go faster. Of course, we'll need four of them .....

This may not be the one you're looking for, but I bet it's the biggest.

What I liked about the '70's is that I only had to sign a waiver (and verbally stated that I would stay out of the way) to enter the track (Watkins Glen), on the Monday after a race weekend, during tire testing (it also work on the Thursday before the weekend). I have to agree with others on this forum that the accessibility factor is one of the greatest differences between the 1970's and today as far as spectators and fans are concern. And the variety of drivers in each series.

Just wait until Peter sees these.....

I was desperately looking for a driver's name on Barry's overall before the penny dropped! Still, I recognized him before I recognized Migault - does that make me a TNF anorak??? :drunk:

Don't think Jarier was around in those days!

I have spoken to Peter and showed him the photos. We worked out that he is cutting out a big Shell sticker to put on the airbox which, as you can see, is bare.

What I am holding is open to conjecture but is NOT a fag end as Peter suggested.

What I'd give for some of that hair nowadays!

Definitely not Sarti anyway. Great pic though, nearly fell off me chair when I saw it.

Barry, I remember your hair blowing in the wind as we made our way to Monaco last year in the Megane Cabrio. You had to wear your baseball cap to keep it in place, remember?

And perhaps others have already said it: If we would apply the system of waivers during any big racing event nowadays, the cars would NOT be able to leave the pits at all. The reason I will not go to Bavaria Racing (the big streetevent with F1 cars in Rotterdam) is due to its succes. I am not going to be crushed by 300.000 racefans...

It's a shame, though...

Forgive me if I've lost track of which picture we're referring to, but surely Connew paddock shots are at the 'Ring aren't they?
That does look rather like the old paddock 'quadrangle' (under discussion in another thread, by coincidence).

I must try to find those my father and I took at Brands and Silverstone in the same period.
