The first ever (proper) automobile race (Paris - Bordeaux - Paris) had a class for motor cycles, two started and none finished. The start was June 11 in 1895, and if I recall correctly, by June 13 when the first car finished both cycles had already retired. The same year was a stand-alone race for "motocycles" in the USofA, however that was the name for cars back then in the States. The first real stand-alone race for motor cycles was September 20 in 1896, but seven of the eight starters were tricycles, as would be the norm for several more years.

So that was the race that Emile Levassor won if I am not mistaken, I will research about the Motorcycle entries as I am very interested.

I can help you, the two starters were:

- #14 Georges Osmont on a "Petrolette" which was actually a Hildebrand & Wolfmüller built in licence, entrant probably Duncan, Suberbie & Cie., a bicycle with 2½ hp 2-cylinder engine of 1489 cc, disqualified after 446 of 1175 km due to missing the time limit, actually completed ca. 580 km.

- #42 Félix Théodore Millet on a Millet bicycle with a 5-cylinder "star" engine in the front wheel, retired after 118 km for unknown reasons.

Another bicycle of unknown make and a De Dion-Bouton tricycle did not start, and a couple of steam cycles (#33 and #41) of unknown make did not appear, and two more entries also failed to appear, including probably one more De Dion-Bouton tricycle (½ hp 1-cylinder engine of 137 cc).

Wow, Thanks a lot. So were they like a bicycle with an engine on one of the wheels?

The Millet was (see http://patentpending....llet_moto.html), although I was wrong - the engine was in the rear wheel, not the front! Ahh, memory! How DO I miss thee...

The H & W was different: http://www.cybermoto..._wolfmuller.htm.

Btw, both these links were the first ones that came up, without any fuss and within seconds, when I simply put the words in an internet search engine - not trying to patronise you, but a budding journalist should perhaps posess some research prowess...
