I found this in a Brighton “Bric-a-brac” shop yesterday.

“Duncan Hamilton invites you to race at Oulton Park. Bell’s new exciting ‘drive yourself’ racing game for two players or teams” Well worth the £8 I paid for the box lid artwork alone - Duncan and a Vanwall followed by two Maserati 250Fs.

The game uses two side by side layouts of Oulton Park with two cars which look like a D-type Jaguar and a front engined GP car. Each player has a steering wheel at the base which can be slid up and across. These move a scissors arrangement under the board which terminate with a magnet. Movement of the magnets draw the cars around the circuit. The progress of the cars is made more difficult by pieces of model hedging, sandbags, banking, fences and bridges which line the circuit layouts. Alas, one of the "steering mechanisms" is missing, but I have managed to make one side of the game operable.

The makers, Bell (Toys and Games) Ltd of London are better known for late 1950s TV based board games - I found the following listed - “Interpol Calling”; “Gun Law”; Emergency Ward 10”; “Wagon Train” “Take your pick with Michael Miles”. This Duncan Hamilton game seems to be one of the harder to find. None are currently listed for sale on the 'net.

Does anyone else have this game? If so, was there an instruction leaflet?

Hi Tony

That's a great find! I had never seen this game before Monday (although I fancy I knew of its existence, probably been mentioned on TNF), when I noticed it was on display in the hospitality centre at Oulton Park, where I was working for the British Super Bikes meeting. Now your thread happens only days later! Strange.

Our fellow TNFer AuroraF1 is "Curator" of OP memorabilia, and I am seeing him at Oulton tomorrow and will ask whether his example has an instruction booklet.

Yes, the artwork is nice, it caught my eye too.

I have/had Gun Law, Dixon of Dock Green and The Army Game and one of my friends had Highway Patrol.

Another magnetic driving game was Driving Test

Yes, Driving Test! Getting the little car in the garage was tricky. I am 95% sure mine is up in my loft, but not seen it for years.

Nice find Tony, I'll have a look in my example of the game and see if there are any instructions with it

A couple of pics of the example in the display case at Oulton. Phil isn't sure if the instructions are with it or not yet.

Presumably, Tony, the second player board is stored under the top one?

Rob, No. In my box the 2 tracks are side-by-side as in the lower photo in my first post. That is as I found it when I removed the lid of the box. They seem to have been designed to fit together like this. I wonder if my set is slightly different to the one that resides at Oulton.

Just had a quick look at my set, the instructions are printed on a label inside the lid (I'll do a scan). Mine looks like the example at Oulton, ie just the one board, set into the base of the box. It comes with some small plastic cars, and a bridge.

There must have been two versions of this game as the one I picked up at the Silverstone Classic last year also has two boards side by side.

Being the usual TNF anorak, I couldn't help wondering where the illustration on the front of the box might represent, and it looked familiar. The radius, gradient and surroundings reminded me of a photo I took at Pescara in 2007 of the hairpin just after the monument.

I thought I'd research the car number 8 and Googled. The findings don't match my theory, but hey, look who the author of the article is...

http://forix.autospo...w/vanwalls.html

If my theory was correct the Vanwall should be number 26, but I think it's more a "representation" than an accurate illustration, or maybe not?

Any other offfers???

I had Driving Test, too. No idea where it went but I certainly don't got it now.

Merit made the Grand Prix Game in the late 1950s, this was two similar boards each controlled by a small steering wheel....still good fun. Cars include Vanwall and 250F Maserati. I also have the Driving Test Game, not too much theory in this one.
