Hi All,

I received this sticker from a very good friend in the U.K. a few years ago:

What can you tell me about this meeting?

Hello Don,

This was the big international meeting that ( at least this is the way it was presented in France at the time... ) the Silverstone people were organising with the goal of being granted a real "British Grand Prix" on the day when the TT would lose its world championship status - which took a few years but eventually happened .

Sadly this 1973 meeting ( who included a leg of the 750cc European championship, won by Paul Smart, and other categories ) is mostly remembered as the day when Kiwi Kim Newcombe lost his life in the 500cc race aboard his König

My main hobby is collecting Marlboro stickers, primarily those made for their riders and drivers.

Here are most of the bike ones I have;

There are many, many gaps in my collection - so if anyone has ones which don't appear here please let me know!

I have some swaps available! :D

Well, Don, quite a few actually!

The earliest one I know I need is Bruno Kneubühler in the [striped] 'shield' style with coloured flag. In the 1979-only design I only have one (Uncini), so I know I need Angel Nieto, Philippe Coulon (French flag), Philippe Coulon (Swiss flag), Ricardo Tormo and Barry Sheene.

From the 1979-1983 'square' design I need several! Michel Frutschi (at least two designs), Graziano Rossi, Eugenio Lazzarini, Gianni Rolando, Marco Lucchinelli, Pier Paolo Bianchi, Loris Reggiani, plus at least one more Coulon and ditto Uncini. Those are from what I've seen scans of; doubtless there are several more.

In the 'photo' style (I don't collect the 1984-1989 style as they're so dull) I am also missing many; Niall MacKenzie, Marco Gentile, Freddie Spencer (at least two), Tadahiko Taira, Rob McElnea, Oliver Petrucciani plus other versions of Wimmer, Cadalora and Lawson. And those are, again, only from the ones I know about...!

:)

How weird - the top row isn't showing...

Agostini, Nieto (from 1972) & Saarinen (1973) are all on that scan which I shall re-do it right now!

Really! Quite some time ago I mentioned to my fellow-collector friend, who knows far more about bikes than I, that it didn't look like his helmet - but I was told I was wrong!

I do know that the graphic on the original 1972 (top-left) Ago sticker depicts him on a Morini. :D

Not a particularly interesting story really; I got to know Rupert after I joined Autosport in 1979, and when I was due to drive an FF1600 at Brands (right) I asked him if I could borrow a lid. The one he lent me transpired to be the helmet he used in F1 during 1977 when driving the Penthouse/Rizla Hesketh (left), and for the first part of '78 when driving the Durex Surtees.

Posted Image Posted Image

Rupert replaced the above helmet during the '78 season with a Bell 'twin window' like the one in my avatar, and so when I was looking for a pic to use I looked at Rupert ones first. The one I ended up using is of Rupert during the 1979 Aurora F1 series when he drove an Arrows - on this occasion sporting one-off sponsorship from a movie entitled The Black Hole.

Where it's quite normal to see replica riders' helmets on road or track, not that common to see drivers' old / new helmets worn on bikes...on the road
Cue Stuart? for the Helmet thread over in the other forum...

Hi Gents,

Not a sticker, but a patch (sorry Stuart, I hope you don't mind):

Posted Image

I wonder if any of you have every seen another like this. I snagged this off eBay several years ago. I've seen similar patches in the past, however they always just said "YAMAHA" and either "250" or "350". I've never seen one that just said "TZ-350".

Just wondering.......... :)

Don
