I'm going to try to be neutral here and just say I think it's remarkable how Kyle Busch celebrated his win in last night's Nationwide race. Remarkable enough to merit it's own thread. You want a spectacle?

Background: the trophy is a custom Gibson guitar and last year he promised each member of his team a piece of it if he ever won the race at Nashville.

So anyway he wins in dominating fashion, winning the pole, leading a vast majority of the laps, leaving less than 25% of the field on the lead lap.

First he does a burnout...

there's a car in there somewhere...

An emergency vehicle was called to the scene but the flames went out on their own pretty quick. I have no idea how he did that, other than he probably had his nose against the outside wall. I've never seen so much fire out of the back of a car that didn't have something seriously wrong with it. The tires were still up afterward ... areas of the race track were on fire for maybe 20 seconds after his burnout.

Then he salutes the crowd and takes a bow:

In victory lane he proceeds to pull a Pete Townsend with the trophy:

It's all good, Sam Bass, the artist who designed and painted the guitar, is all smiles.

I miss these kind of things in European racing scene :( You get a penalty if you do burnouts in F1 :drunk:

Sam Bass is a legend! I am sure it didn't phase him in the slightest, actually he probably enjoyed the fact he got a lot more exposure. btw I got him to paint my helmet in Concord back in 96

Shame isnt it.

Zanardi's nuts after winning a race in CART were always awesome.

Gad, watching some dolt who probly doesn't even play smash up a Gibson Les Paul is galling. How lame. At the very least, if he really needed to pretend he was Pete Townsend 40 yrs ago, they coulda given him a cheap copy to wreck. Grrrrr.

They really, really, really need to get some decent trophies in NASCAR. That Miles the Monster thing last week, and the MFI special you get for winning Daytona...yeek.

Although I've never seen a Bass guitar with so many strings. ;)

One of the V8 Supercars a few years ago stood on the pitwall and thumped his fists into the air after his win and got fined $5000

Wild, just the sort of thing I'd do.Closest we've got in F1 in recent times was Alex Wurz.

My favourite burnout, of modern times, was Alesi at france in his last french gp I believe. He even threw his helmet into the crowd if memory serves haha

Nothing much, that's the sad part: he celebrated in style on the podium. Unless you count Kimi's half-hearted doughnut at Spa from a few years ago (when they were required to turn around and head into pitlane the wrong way).

Anyone plays guitar here? My heart sinks a bit when I see a piece of (probably) good equipment wasted, but hey, it's not like he was going to play it anyway. Good show.

I own an immaculate 73 SG (with bigsby) and rarely play it for fear of damaging it, and use an epiphone copy so how lame is that. The Sam Bass artwork was probably worth more than the Les Paul anyway, BUT look at the exposure that Sam and Gibson get out of a stunt like this, if it was just presented and put in his trailer no one would have mentioned it. Now heaps of people who have never really heard of sam bass will look him up www.sambass.com

No thats a popular Myth!
The reason they dont do burnouts is the fear of minimum weight these cars have to run.......as doing burnout will remove good chunk of tyre and would be well shot of 605kg limit!
And there is a minimum time stipulated to reach the pits back after the race is over.
These are the reasons.

We have seen Alesi do it lot of times in 2001 and 2002
and also Kimi did it in 2007....nobody complained!

Alexander Wurz just sayed during the broadcast that drivers are not allowed to make donuts after a win because the FIA forbidds it.

I wouldn't have smashed the guitar but the question is, did he have smash it enough so eveyone on the team could have a piece of it?

Great burnouts and no special effects needed!!!

Coultard was going to do burnouts in Brazil after the race last year because the FIA couldn't punish him as it was the last race of the career, he stated this during an interview after the race.

Shame it didn't happen though.

Kyle is an idiot. I wonder how many drivers would give their sole to win that trophy. Kyle wins it and smashes it to pieces. And smashing it so everyone could have a piece is a weak excuse, he could have easily looked like much less of a douche if he cut it up in the shop .

I was just watching the video and he did a bunch of donuts in the grass beforehand...so some organic material might have built up on his tyres and in his fenderwell which then mixed with the rubber and the whole thing caught fire.

I was wrong, he didn't nose up against the wall to do the burnout, though.

Yeah but given how everyone is smiling and happy about it in images, I'd say the stunt was planned to generate such reactions and publicity from the onset.

Meh! He did right in smashing that ugly, overpriced and overrated piece of firewood. Had it been a vintage one I'd be horrified, but modern gibsons, and specially Les Pauls, are all about the glitz and the $ instead of quality.

Or maybe Busch is a Fender man :p

The burnout was cool, the smashing of the guitar was stupid.

I own a 1980 Les Paul Custom, and I play it all the time. :D

Hardly. This kind of stuff is usually written by people with little or no modern Gibson experience. The quality is all there. Go to your local guitar store, rent a Les Paul Standard for two or three months and see if you still feel that way. More likely you won't be able to put it down.

Kyle got enough money to buy every member of the team a guitar, buy 10 for charity, and buy himself a new one and not even raise an eyebrow.

See how EVERYONE is smiling?

Its called publicity.

Imagine the other version of this thread "kyle busch wins race, hangs guitar on wall"

wow.

Why not just have #1-2 finishers have a wrestling match?

You have to live in the southern US to get the full experience. Above age 40, once the plastic surgery sets in, it gets pretty ugly.

Hehe.

I dunno, the painter did get some exposure for it, but its definitely got to be hard to watch something you just put your time and effort into get smashed up without a thought. I dont think I could have done it unless it was just a normal Les Paul w/o a custom paintjob.

I'm sure Kyle said something like, "No hard feelings man, I was just pumped" or something, and I'm sure its probably not a big deal at all.
