What's going on with Toro Rosso? They are using the same chassis (not quite the same spec, but not much different) but they were nowhere in Turkey. Considering how good the RBR chassis is known to be on the quicker corners, you'd think TR would be more competitive. The Ferrari engine advantage they had over the senior team isn't as significant this year (since the FIA allowed Renault to update their lump), and the drivers aren't as good as the RBR duo, but I would still expect them to be more competitive.

Perhaps the time difference isn't much different than last year, but the amazingly closely bunched field (1.5 seconds) makes them look worse by comparison.

Thoughts?

I don't know, but I've noticed it before. IMO they're underacheiving a little bit either in the setup department or in the drivers department. That's the only reason I'm not keen to hail Buemi as the next big champion already, like some other people are doing.

Do they have identical front and rear wings and diffuser development? Or are they left to their own devises on the development front?

Also, perhaps the Ferrari engine does not fit so well in the car? They may have had to compromise the rear suspension etc.

They get the newest developments 2-3 races later than RBR + the car/parts are not longer built by Red Bull Technology + drivers who don´t know how to set up the car

The real reason is that the RBR suspension. gearbox and 'road-interaction' (delivering the power on the road) is optimised in favour of the Renault engine, not the Ferrari engine, as was the case with the last RBR cars which where all an evolution of the former Ferrari powered RBR cars.

That is why STR is having problems.

Going further on gearbox part: if you consider the fact that Ferrari needed a couple of weeks and complete redesign of the rear to introduce a (interim) DD, how do you think the differences stated above would affect the aero of the STR, because yet again: they are betting their money and RD fully on RBR this year.

the difference was never THAT big between vettel and bourdais...ok, vettel was a lot faster but not 1st and 20th on the grid..

Since 2007 i believe STR have been responsible for their own manufacturing. The delay in getting the STR2 on track in 2008 was related to the time needed to manufacture the tubs, which didnt come from RBT.

how different is this ferrari engine to the renault/merc ones?

I think Racing Dutchman has a point that the 08 STR is suited to the Ferrari engine, being an evolution on the 07 RBR/STR. This would also tie in with the better 2nd half performance of the 08 STR compared with the RBR and hence why there is now a gulf between the 2 teams pace.

in terms of aero development, i would've hazarded a guess they shouldn't be as far off the pace of RBR as it is currently.
