Hi,

Does anyone have images that they can share (and can do so within the rules!) of the gearbox/oil tank/rear wing set up of the Lotus 72 that Ronnie Peterson raced at the French Grand Prix in 1973?

(I believe, although I am not sure, the rear wing mounting on top of the oil tank/cooler had been modified for the Spanish Grand Prix and at the French Grand Prix a subframe was used to enable the rear wing to sit a further 10 inches back).

Only 10 inches!? I recall 1973 and 1974 saw some huge extensions to the rear wing mounts, especially after the height reg' came in. I think McLaren's M23 of 1974 had the furthest rear mounted wing, and some of the F2 cars really 'stretched' the reg's to the full!

Does anyone have any pictures they are willing to share of the 1973 French Grand Prix at Paul Ricard, specifically the Lotus 72s that raced?

Many thanks to “B Squared” who helped me out with this previously (please see http://forums.autosp...owtopic=110554). Any more images that can be provided would be gratefully received, be them of the event or of the Lotuses (any pictures of the 72s from the British Grand Prix would also be helpful should anyone have any…).

not quite.... the rules changed in 1974 to limit the overhang to 1 metre where it stayed until the spanish gp in 1976 (when it was reduced to 800mm). the 1973 m23 had an overhang of about 1100mm (can nigel b confirm the dimension maybe?). in 1974 the m23's gearbox spacer was increased in length in an attempt to mainitain (in part) the gap between the wing leading edge and airbox trailing edge, so the flow regime was similar, but the leverage was not. indirectly this then exagerated the tendency that was already there to place more weight onto the front axle and to the introduction over the next 12 months of a new generation of goodyear front tyres that were ill suited to the rear dominated weight distribution of the 72 and to its low front unsprung weight. which is ironic, because the 72 had started the move to increased rear wing overhang in 1972!

i think the 72 probably had more overhang again than the m23 after its french gp mod shown above and i wouldnt be surprised if that final extension wasnt inspired by the m23 which had appeared a couple of months before and was extremely competitive with the 72 from the word go.

the f2's you are thinking of were the elf 2's shown in the attachment to post 4 above.
