FSR ( http://www.formula-simracing.net ) is an online sim racing championship using a modified version of the CTDP 2006 F1 mod for PC sim rFactor. Its the closest thing to a virtual F1 championship you can get and has its own dedicated live broadcast by the team at http://www.prosimracing.com/. Every race is broadcast live with a full commentary team and camera people covering the race. They do a stunning job of conveying the excitement and knowledge to the viewers.

FSR is strictly run by a dedicated team of race directors and developers who ensure a level playing field for all competitors. The competition is fierce and the series attracts the best sim racers in the world. The sim is extremely realistic (read difficult) and uses the same 3 session qualifying and full GP distances format. The calender mimicks the real F1 season and tracks (usually one week behind the real F1). There are 5 full leagues each of around 26 drivers. I race in the premier World Championship category for the Formula Racing Organisation team http://formularacing.org/index.php Its also alot cheaper than competing in real life racing ;)

The latest race in the the World Champhionship series at Turkey was an absolute humdinger and probably would have gone down as a historic real F1 race such was the level of competition and on track action. It made the real F1 race at the Istanbul Park track look decidedly boring IMO.

I had the best race of my debut season at Turkey after a difficult start to the year where we have all too often been the Force India of the virtual racing world. For Turkey however we developed a great race setup and I managed to climb from 13th into the points in the first of my three stints. It came to an abrupt end during my second stint but youll have to watch the broadcast to see the nature of my demise on lap 18. My journey involved avoiding the current championship leader by mere millimetres on the opening lap and a massive ding dong of a battle with Sean Edwards ( a real life Porsche Supercup race winner for Konrad motorsport http://www.seanedwardsracing.com/ ). Sean who was later to be involved in an even bigger battle with Monaco FSR winner Lee Morris for most of the middle of the race.

My race highlights occured laps 8,9 and 10 battling Sean Edwards on the back straight and ended at T1 lap 18, hope you enjoy! The end of the race is a real nail biter.

Very impressive stuff.

Back in the day I ran one of the LFRS leagues and it was always a dream to be able to have an online race and cover it with some sort of live video/audio feed.

Nicely done.

FSR is the best online open wheel league in the world IMO. It's like the F1 of online racers. The cream of the crop.

Good luck to you, and everyone who races there. I was once going to join, but the time zones were the biggest road block (3am Monday morning etc). I have some friends who I used to race with who are in it tho and who put up with those start times. I'm getting a G25 and a new PC very soon, so I could think about joining but I haven't raced in at least 6 months, and it'd take another 6 months just to get up to speed and even then I'd probably get beaten by the same guys as before, since they haven't stopped.

Well was definately my best chance of points but didnt go to plan.

I was onfire pace wise at Spa. P2 in Q1 and Q2 with 1m40.6s. In Q3 however I got comprimised by one of my main rivals into malmedy which cost me around 3/4 10ths and I ended up starting 6th. Lost a couple of places at the start but Id developed a very drivable super low downforce setup which gave me an extra 10kmh over the rest of the field. This allowed me to pass people on the straights easily and was slightly quicker over a lap on fresh tyres but I was a bit slower in sector 2. I also made the mistake of not changing tyres after Q3 run so started the race on worn tyres which meant my SS tyres were going off after 6 laps. This was enough to push me back into the clutches of a driver behind in the first stint and we had a tangle after I repassed him damaging my rear wing. Repaired in the pits but got myself a drive through for speeding. Over a minute down and putting too much fuel in I was back down in 20th after 8 laps From there on in however I drove a perfect race and got back to 10th and set 3rd fastest lap.

Paul, I'm guessing that the FSR cars are a bit quicker than the standard CTDP cars?

I'm not a slow sim racer but the times seem abnormally quick for the standard mod.

I think they are quicker than standard CTDP but not by a huge amount Rob. Maybe 1s or so. They are a fair bit quicker than real F1 cars too, usually 2-4s a lap. I think some editing needs doing to the tyre and aero models to make them more realistic. The tyre wear rate is probably too low aswell, its possible to make the softest compounds last at any race sometimes on 2 stop strategy.

Morris has a driving/rationality disorder and gets himself penalties pretty much every race. The fact he won at Monaco made it worse for him because he believes he deserves to be at the front every race. When it doesnt work out he tries to ruin for everyone else like a baby throwing toys out the pram. Pretty sad waste of talent. But pretty funny watching him slam his car into the pit exit wall

Youll probably have to contact one of the admins there to get a version of the FSR 09 mod (that is based on the CTDP 06 mod). Finding a drive is another matter but shouldnt be too difficult if you can prove yourself.

Valencia update:

Finally scored first points of the season on the Valencia street track tonight A welcome gift after being so on the pace at Spa only to have problems in the race. Was only quick enough for P14 in qual but a clean nose, 2 stop strategy and no mistakes managed to get myself up to 8th by the end.

Braking was very marginal, many people in the other 4 races of the weekend had failures in the final stint so with big ducts and a gentle left foot I had to coax the car to the end for a very satisfying finish albeit a lap down.

Had a great battle with Shaun Stroud who is actually the track editor of the series. He fell fowl of his own creation on about lap 17 when he clipped a wall whilst I was hustling him which dropped him to the back.

Agreed with everything, the racing is fantastic (even if there's a couple of Montoyas like in every league), live broadcasts are actually more entertaining to watch than real f1, huge difference for example in FSR Valencia compared to real one where I almost slept half way through. But still what makes the difference is to be part of the racing yourself, that's the only way to get an idea on all the dimensions it takes. I seriously recommend everyone interested to join, even without a lot of experience you can race in AMA and enjoy races on good servers with dedicated race directors. To get some idea I recommend watching our latest promo video.

Maybe a few words about my own Valencia experience as well. 5th place in qualifying after a clean lap, managed to keep my position in race until the notorious Morris guy decided to overtake two cars in one corner, so I ended up with slight damage on suspension. Pushed on and managed to hold up the 4-stopping Twister-Racing guys after pit stops which helped my countryman Mikkonen to secure the win. In the final laps I was about to lose my brakes, so had to nurse the car home as well. Still in the last corner of the last lap I passed Disley who had some blunder. 4th place so overall I'm quite satisfied, also for Mikkonen who took the first Finnish victory in ages. Yeah great race from you John-Eric and the latest video is a masterpiece, noticed I made a couple of appearances in it too Particularly the one where you tried to get past me out of Malmedy at Spa before I too fell fowl of the Morris ;) The music takes me back a few years to my clubbing days! The footage seems so smooth and crisp compared to the replay data, very impressive editing. Looking forward to more battles in future

Just started practicing for the next round of FSR at Monza. The race is next weekend (wknd after the real GP). Was watching some online vids and came across Rubens' all time Monza lap record in the Ferrari in 2004:



I just beat his time by 2 tenths ;) Dab of oppo out of Lesmo 2 aswell



Its actually really helpful watching the real onboards to see what lines and gearing the F1 teams are using such is the accuracy of the game. Its not perfect but close enough to correlate.

Update:

Raced at the legendary Suzuka on sunday and it turned out to be the race of the season. Jaakko Mikkonen and Dennis Hirrle battled over 3rd place for almost the entire race routinely going through T1 side by side lap after lap. I had a severe lack of practice but climbed as high as 7th before my first stop after starting 15th. Absolutely amazing track to race on. I was set for a 9th place finish when a few laps from the end I was caught by a charging Blair Disley and we had a titanic battle, I managed to hold him off for three laps until when exiting the triangle attempting a switchback my old tyres let go under power and I did a pretty good Timo Glock impression. That corner is not as easy as it looks!

Im sure Im not the only one who thinks Jacks commentary is brilliant. I honestly think he could get paid to do TV commentary, he has a great balance of enthusiasm, quick wit and knowledge about racing.

The Mikkonen Hirrle battle was one of the best Ive ever seen. Side by side through T1 and 2 at least three times cleanly. I make an appearance at the end of part 3 for all the wrong reasons but by that stage I wasnt about to roll over to come 10th so kept my foot in and paid the price!

Last race took place at Montreal as a replacement for Abu Dhabi for which a circuit hasnt been modelled yet and was subsequently re ordered as finishing the season at Montreal wouldve been so wrong. Excellent highlights and commentary of the best sim racers in the world taking on the Gilles Villeneuve track but some very questionable rejoins from some drivers! And couldn't help but notice the dominant winner was no other than Sean Edwards who I drove against in the FSR race in the OP

Cor, this is a blast from the past. I've since accepted that I could never dedicate enough time to be competitive so I'm not doing any more sim racing. I occasionally have a go for fun but it's getting less and less often.
