Hi.

Thought about asking in this fascinating forum, your opinion on the Williams FW11B vs. McLaren MP 4/4, from a technical point of view. Which one was better? Apart from the statistics...

I know the statistics quite well, but have no sufficient knowledge on the technical side: quality of the chassis and engines, for instance.

best regards

I'm no technical guru but anyway,l they were designed for different regulations because of turbo restrictions in 1988. I recall reading that Nigel Roebuck was convined Benetton would have been strong competition for McLaren in 1988 had Ford continued with their V6 turbo. I also recall reading some time ago that Patrick Head wasn't all that impressed by the MP4/4 claiming Williams could have produced a car good in 1988 if they maintained backing from Honda. He also mentioned that Williams planned to produce a low lying car like the MP4/4 but Honda were not ready for it at the time. Both cars appeard to be the class of the field for their respective seasons but it is interesting to note that the only time McLaren looked a bit off in 1988 was during qualifying at Silverstone where Ferrari didnt have to rely on bottom end grunt and obviously fuel consumption issues which was not a factor in qualifying. I think the aerodynamics of the F1-87/88C mean that it handled better through fast sweeping corners.
