As I remember there were three cars built and run by VLM- those raced by Harvy and Bellm, plus a third used by Steve Soper for the majority of the season, though he missed some rocunds when his DTM commitments took precedence. Prodrive ran similar E36s, for Tim Sugden and Alain Menu, with Kris Nissen stepping in after Menu was injured mid-season. Prodrive also had a third car, which appeared once at Knockhill for Colin McRae.
From memory, there were quite a few technical differences between the VLM and Prodrive interpretations of the same car- possibly different gearboxes and engine builders. I've got a vague memory that the VLR cars (and possibly Prodrive's) also used ABS?
I might have some technical details in a book- I'll dig them out

Don´t know if my information is enough detailed and what kind of info Giovanni is looking for, but this comes from memory:
-The E36 Coupe was powered by 2.0 litre BMW S14-engine, which origins from previous M3-modell. Originally the engine was 2.3 litre and the capacity was later 2.5 in SportEvolution modells, because the factory wanted to keep in touch of Mercs in DTM. Previous year E30 shaped M3 was run in BTCC with 2.0 litre SS14 configuration. There is an italian BMW modell 320is, which used 2.0 litre S14 in street format. My memory says that the bore and stroke wasn´t similar in italian street version compared to 2.0 litre British race version.
The standard e36 shaped 318is had 1.8 litre M42 engine, which had 16 valve head, but was totally different engine. Later, I think for 1995, BMW introduced S42 engine for SuperTouring which was based on M42 street engine.
-Bore and stroke wasn´t ideal in S14 2.0 litre format which had regulated 8500 rpm limit. That ment the power band for 2.0 litre S14 version was narrow compared to Vauxhall, Toyota etc.
-VLM team fit six-speed hollinger-gearbox to cure the problem. ie. the engine could be used on the optimum revs for more time. Much rumours are flying around where VLM got money for Hollinger gearbox...
-The E36 model had completely different rear-suspension configuration compared to all previous BMW-models. From early 60´s BMW used so called Semi-trailin arm rear-suspension, it was used even in popular E30 M3. With E36 it was multilink suspension, called Z-suspension, which gave more predictable handling in street format than the sinister semi-trailing arm configuration. However race-teams had much problems to sort out the Z-axle for race use. The standard suspension parts flexed too much under race use and gave a car unpredicatble handling. I guess there were several modifications for rear-axle parts during the season.
I wrote several years back a little story of the E36 SuperTouring history for BMW Club Magazine, I don´t have a copy right now, but quick glance at google confirms the stories. If there are something which is not true or needs clarification, I´d be glad to hear!
