A question has been put to me by an old friend and I think that, perhaps, the answer could be found among TNFers...

This SS Jaguar raced pre-war, what my friend wants to know is, "Was it ever supercharged during its racing career?"

Over to you, and thanks for any responses.

I don't think so. There is no mention of a supercharger in Paul Skilleter's Jaguar the Sporting Heritage . It had an experimental 3.5 litre engine before the production cars did, which may be what your friend is thinking of. In its final prewar run at Shelsley Walsh it took the 3001-5000cc unsupercharged class.

18008 in fact it only became old number 8 in the mid to late 1970's and was not a period name for the car

Yes I have been asked the same question and whilst I couldn't give an immediate answer on the phone thinking about it I don't believe it was raced with a supercharger prewar or in fact postwar and in fact I think the supercharger was added in the 1970's by david barber
Prewar it was running methanol and very high compression ratios ie
Shelsley 1938 13.5 to 1 169bhp at 4250rpm weight 17cwt

I would love to hear from anyone with more info on this car or other SS100's around the world for my next book on the individual histories of each and every SS90 and SS100

I can confirm that David Barber supercharged it in the 1970s. It became a very fast car indeed which caused a certain amount of ill feeling at the time.

Hi
I'm hoping you can help.
I'm planning to construct a car based on old number 8 and other similar 3.5 Litre SS100 specials, that competed prior to 1949, to comply with Confederation of Australian Motor Sports, Historic Racing, Group Kb, eligibility.
I am in need of as much Detailed information as I can get re. Photo's (especialy of the car on the grid and in competition), technical drawings, competition data, magazine reports etc. from the era. to validate my application and assist me with the build.
So far I have some info. from the Jaguar Heritage 1935-1938 web site and a poor quality photo' from the Lynx Motors web site of old number 8 at a Goodwood revival.
I have emailed Jaguar, Lynx and Paul Skilleter, but no replies, so far.

Did Campbell McLaren own the car in question in the late '70s / early '80s? I'm sure I've seen a photo of it at Ingliston

that would certainly tie in with my memory of it at Ingliston, or did Tom M buy it from Campbel Mclaren?

A bit off topic, but 18007 appears to have been the number of the SS Jaguar raced in 1936 by Fred McEvoy
