Does anybody have information about a Straight 8 transverse engined Formula 1 Ferrari conceived, but not I think built, in 1962. It was apparantly designed in conjunction with onw of the Italian motorcycle manufacturers, presumably Gilera or MV-Augusta. It would be the only Straight 8 Ferrari apart from the original 815.
I remember this from a contemporary Motoring News, about this time of the year.

Gilera, I'm fairly sure, there were drawings in an American magazine at the time, if I recall correctly. That was probably C & D, or was it SCG, and it was late 1962 if I'm on the right track.
The other straight 8 Ferrari was nicely innovative, too.

This was a project initiated by Carlo Chiti that did indeed base its engine technology on motorcycle practice. He mentions it in his books.

He obviously didn't use it for the ATS which used scrapyard technology!

Of course, another straight-8 Ferrari was the 158....
I do remember seeing the article in one of the magazines mentioned recently, but haven't the slightest which one. I think it was actually mentioned in several of them. I will try to remember to look this weekend when I go home.

DC - I thought that Alfa dropped the Scuderia and ran the 158s themselves.

Sorry Ray, this is before my time. I cannot find anything about it. If someone can supply a model number I will take another crack at researching it.

Don, If the 158 was a Straight 8 Ferrari, then the 1980 replica was the first genuine Alfa Bimotore
