Hi!
Who knows something about the Leyland engine
he installed in the ex-Revson machine?
Did it have 5000cc? The car must have been
quite good. McCormack won the 1977 Australian
Gold Star and challenged Warwick Brown at
Surfers Paradise in 1978. Who recalls that
race?
McCormack`s F5000 Mclaren M23

Island, do you get Motor Racing Australia in your corner of the South Island?
It carried my story about this car in its regular feature "FGast That's Past" just a few months ago.
Yes, somebody knows this car, and in fact it was mentioned on one of these threads at that time... I asked for details of the races it ran in the States.
The engine was 5000cc, as it had been in the Elfin ML6 to which it was previously fitted. In its uptimum form it had new heads designed by Phil Irving and cast in a new Comalco alloy that eliminated the need for valve seat and guide inserts.
Its forte was fast corners, where the alloy engine enabled it to retain balance while the heavier Chevy engines tried to play pendulum in the Lolas etc. It also had a small tyre advantage, being able to use the Dunlop F1 rubber used by Hasemi in Japan.
I wasn't at that Surfers, but I did see it win the Gold Star race there in 1977 (the day after I set fire to 15 acres adjoining my backyard - but that's another story) and flying away in the lead at Phillip Island. It was as these two circuits it really shone.
At Wanneroo, however, it simply kept on breaking gears.
McCormack had Peter Holinger cut new gears for the FG400 box to make it a bit stronger, and that worked everywhere else, but on the sharp climb out of Coca Cola corner it broke second or third gear every time. His desire to retain the FG instead of going to the DG was again related to weight and pendulums.
If I still have it, I will email you the story I wrote.

island - did you get my email?
Judging by how quiet you've been I'd say you did.

I've already sent it to the address on your posts... I'll do it again, but be warned, you're asking for it!
