Kimi had no problems. He was Ron's golden boy and got everything he wanted. Now he's coming back even though he stated he was happier at Ferrari which reeks of desperation.

he didnot have any problems
it was the schumacher era, and everyone knew that to win a WDC you need to be in a Ferrari, So he switched to Ferrari and Got the WDC in the first year

In brief, he didn't get along with Ron "We'd never tell our drivers how to conduct their personal lives but here's some fatherly advice anyway" Dennis.

I understand the last straw was when he got a written warning following one of his notorious private life escapades that he considered none of McLaren's business, so he more or less stomped off in a huff and signed with Ferrari. OK, I exaggerate a bit but that's the gist of it.

Mind you, it certainly 'helped' that Ferrari were building reliable rocketships year in year out whereas McLaren, during the five years Kimi was with them, never once quite managed to mate reliability with pace. So it would've been frustration aplenty even without Ron's input. Anyone remember how in 2005 Alonso used to do that counting-the-wins thing with his fingers? Well, Räikkönen was doing the same thing - only he was counting engine failures.

I'm curious what Kimi has got to tell about Ferrari the day he will leave them and heads for a team that will respect him in each and every way, Kimi didnt get the respect he should have get.

McLaren fans all around the world are waiting for their lost friend, its time you get home and give Ferrari a taste of their own in 2010.

Kimi had no problem insulting McLaren by saying he was happier at Ferrari and saying bad things about the work enviroment even after all the McLaren did for him.

I guess his comments about McLaren were before he got a good view in Ferrari's kitchen, and did Kimi really insult McLaren? I honestly cant remember, i do remember him saying he was happier at Ferrari tho, but what would you say? And if Kimi really has such bad memories from those times, he wouldnt return. :)

What is the true reason Ferrari 'dumping' Kimi? ... If you ask me its action -> reaction, i think its Ferrari's own fault Kimi lost his motivation, and Ferrari might 'dump' Kimi by the lack of motivation but Ferrari doesnt look for Kimi's behaviour / problem at itself. What caused Kimi's lack in motivation is the simple question Ferrari should ask itselfs.

I am going to repeat some commonly known factors, but one visible problem was that McLaren was breaking down quite often, and that was quite possibly one of the main reasons for frustration. It may have been related to Kimi being hard on it, as some suggest. Since Kimi left, the reliability has got better. The another theory is that Adrian Newey, who left at the same time and later made Red Bull fast but somewhat unreliable, was the reason for unhoped collapses. The "Neweymobiles" have been considered being very much on edge.

Second reason for frustration may have been Ron Dennis, whose tendency to control may have given itches to some drivers with edged personallity, Kimi, Fernando, JPM possibly being among them. David and Mika seemed to do well with Ron though. But Ron is gone now, so maybe both the atmosphere and technical team are a bit different nowadays.

The information is limited, because Raikkonen has not given too many bursts of sour grapes to the press. That is also why McLaren appreciates him somewhat still and is willing to take him back.

The amount of promised ice cream is also unknown, but one thing is certain: it will be Fernando's supporter paying for it.

Räikkönen's inabilty to give precise technical feedback and to articulate precisely the development direction is the probable reason.

Kimi didn't like the way McLaren handles their drivers. I mean all these PR stunts etc. He was forced to do things he didn't like. Apparently, he only likes racing in Formula 1. In Ferrari he got much more freedom in this aspect.

Anyway, McLaren owes at least 1 championship to Kimi. He should have won WDC in 2003 and 2005 but reliability "killed" him. I assume it's done deal already and I think this time McLaren will give him all necessary tools.

i really dont think that was any way near the mains reasons he left mac at that time..hed been working with ron for 5 years..surely it didnt just pop up all of a sudden in 05..there was really no real tension b/w him and mac even as he left them..theyre was a small fallout with ron but that was it..whitmarsh i feel admired genuinely and will continue to do so

the reason was very simple..ferrari made the most reliable cars in that era...if u wanted to be WDC,u had to sign up with ferrari..

every f1 driver is success driven..he had driven the wheels of any car he was given those 5 years at mac and yet had no WDC's to his name.Haug said the exact same things about their engine failures those years in the interview posted yesterday in the other kimi thread.

kimi will not disclose what happened at ferrari with his years there..he's just that type ..maybe an autobiography many years after hes retired but certainly nothing during the time he drives..

Hardly and insult really - what was he supposed to say?

"I am happy at Ferrari, for sure, but it was better at McLaren who are the enemy of the team that I drive for now and pay my massive salary."

Sound stupid? "I think so, for sure."

If he insulted Mac so bad, why do the Mac staff apparently still talk in awe about Kimi's laps, and why have MW and Nobby jumped at the chance of getting him back.

I read somewhere here, McLaren has eyes only for Kimi and Kimi is only looking at McLaren.

Remember Kimi only had the best car at Mac for one year out of five, meantime Ferrari had the best car pretty much four out of those five years.

Norbert Haug yesterday: "We have worked together with Kimi for 5 years and that time was absolutely positive. We should have won two WDC's. One we lost by 2 points and the reason for that was a DNF. In 2005 we would have won without a doubt if it hadn't been for our engines breaking down."

Basically, yet again, it was poor driver management from Ron. In later years he seemed to need a father/mentor relationship with his drivers which was never going to work with Kimi. He kept promising championships when the Mercedes kept losing them, he started speaking for Kimi to the press when the relationship was going sour and there were always rumours that he stuck his nose in Kimi's personal business as Kismet has said (unsubstantiated I believe).

He's been responsible for losing Prost, Senna, JPM, Kimi and Alonso when all were at or near the top of their game.

He was an amazing team principle particularly in building up the company, forging working relationships with suppliers, sponsors etc. but in terms of managing drivers, I think McLaren will do a lot better with him gone.

PS. And let's be honest, any driver on the grid would have jumped at the chance to take over Schumacher's cockpit.

That sums up the problem. Both sides had a valid point and neither was willing to concede ground. With RD gone I suspect McLaren will be perfect for Raikkonen (except for the super-fast teammate), it's far less political than Ferrari.

Yeah, there's an inherent inconsistency in vrba's postulates - on the one hand he is bad developer, on the other hand his car is best or 2nd best at worst. Not to mention McLaren still raving about exactly the precise feedback they got from him.

Yes, I've edited my post and added a bit about machinery. I think the opening post was asking what went wrong in 2005/2006 and if that's why Kimi left rather than just why he left. I answered what went wrong and I honestly think it contributed to KR's decision.

Ferrari gave him a WDC ....McLaren did not, they stuck with him in 08 and 09 despite his poor performance and i'm sick of this crap about the car not being suited to Kimi. I'm sure the Ferrari engineers designed a car for Massa and not for the reigning world champion  Massa stood up in 08 while Kimi did not and considering his massive salary, it was simply not good enough

his results in the second half of 09 have been impressive but it was too little too late since it appears the decision had already been made
