there are several shots of the Lotus 49

I see Hill's car has the same green inner screen arrangement as the number 21 Clark car in Luc's first picture.

Where is Luc's picture from?

For no apparent reason, the word "Tasman" has been cropping up in the corners of my (overworked!) mind today.

Still have my MkII, DN3, DN6 to play with.
Dennis

Now you got me really confused: you own a Mk.II???

I am also confused. I have thought for years that the Mk IIs were morphed into Mk IIIs. I seem to recall Peter Bryant confirming this in his book, "Can Am Challenger".

The first picture (#21) is from Spa-Francorchamps, the other two from the British GP at Silverstone.
Here's another picture from Spa 1967 (Bernard Cahier looks on) :

That's often said, but is it true? Michael Oliver's 49 book says that Hill's car had a prototype aluminium nosecone. The 33s were fibreglass.

Indeed, Michael's book quotes Dale Porteous (one of the mechanics charged with returning the crashed car to Hethel and preparing the new tub for the GP) as saying that they used a prototype aluminium nosecone which was in the workshop and which had been built as a buck for a nose which was never used. And he should know, so the Lotus 33 story does appear to be an unfounded rumour.

So, dare I ask, which is the 'proper' 49 nose? Or are they all right, even the less aesthetically pleasing ones (provided they don't break the scales, as per Doug's post)?

Dennis, thank you for that info. I haven't got around to answer earlier.
Now you got me really confused: you own a Mk.II???

Duc-Man,

When I sold back the Mk1 to Don Nichols, he still had one MkII chassis that was not modified to MkIII spec. Since the remaining MkII's where converted to MkIII (one is Fred Cziska's naturally aspirated one, the other the turbo version), I though it would be best to restore the remaining chassis to MkII spec. So the work is in progress and should be done by next year. We are inclined to build it to the early Mosport version, but Chaparrel Cross Ram fuel injection systems are in short supply (ie $$$$$$), so we may end up with the Laguna Seca version with vertical trumpets.

Do you mind posting photos of the work in progress? Maybe in the 'Trevor Lee Harris Shadow' thread?

But I'm still a little confused.
Peter Bryant wrote that there was one Mk.II chassis that was rebuild into the Mk.III and is now owned by Fred Cziska.
During the '72 season was a second chassis build straight away as Mk.III. That is todays turbo car.
I guess that Peter Bryant was mistaken...

It would be great to see all Shadow Can-Am car types in one place once. Hope that's going to happen...

You've made your point, maybe you know Sir John better than I do, but it still looks like him to me. I don't think that the outfit is much to go on, anyone who so much as sat in a Mercedes at the Festival seemed to be kitted out in the full McLaren Vodafone Mercedes gear, even if they were only there for the weekend.

...but where reproducing the original nose shape is concerned 'The Eye' has been lacking, and right now, so far as the NMM is concerned, it has a running Lotus 49 which is currently costing it nothing - and that is a critical consideration these days.DCN

Was at Beaulieu yesterday - visiting Bluebird CN7 on its "birhday" - and noted this archive pic (on the wall behind the Itala inthe motorsport section) of Jim Clark aviaiting te 49 at the German GP in 1967. Comparing it to R3's nose I am not so sure that the intake is that wrong. What does look wrong is the nose angle which seems to have far less "droop" compared to its appearance in period photographs. I wonder what the views of Classic Team Lotus are on this matter as presumably a similar debate has ensued regarding R2s rebuild. Maybe, in 2012, and ossibly as a theme within an appropriate gathering, we could have a 45th anniversary gathering of all the 49s!

Duc-Man,

Posting a Peter Bryant designed car on a "Trevor Lee Harris Shadow" thread would not do proper service to Peter. Set up a Shadow MkII thread for all to post their thoughts and vintage photos and I will do my best to post the progress photos on the car restoration.

With regards to the chassis that we got from Don Nichols, the MkII and MkIII tubs are essentially identical, and it may be this tub was built in 1972 and not 1971, however the panels and the rivet spacing match the early 1971 photos. Don was/is not the most forthcoming individual, and may have had this tub constructed without Peter's knowledge by Pro-Fab in 71/72. Remember Nichols had already hired Tony Southgate before the end of the 1972 Can Am season (without telling Peter!!) and the commitment to constructing the 1973 DN2 Can Am came after the design of the 1973 DN1 Formula One car.

It would be far easier to make the car into a MkIII, but we felt it would be best to have a MkII configuration since the others were converted.

I share your desire to see all the Shadow cars in one place. There are about 28 different owners by my records. Should not be any more difficult than herding cats!!!!

Dennis

FEV1H is of course the real deal - winner of the 1970 London-Mexico World Cup Rally. Retained by Ford since its victory and only brought out on very few occasions every year, to be driven by carefully selected drivers.
