It goes like this.... just before Christmas my tame computer geek re-formatted my machine, for reasons I won't go into here. All my car files and circuit files were saved in a folder, which he re-installed for me.
However, naturally, I had to re-install the game. And that's where the problems begun. As the game was installing I kept getting messages telling me that this file was missing or that file was missing etc etc etc and although, in the end, the game appeared to have installed, when I ran it, it froze totally and my computer had to be turned off to unfreeze everything.
I blamed my Legends disc, so I bought a new one.
Last night I tried to install that one and although I never had any missing file messages, as the installation neared completion I had a message telling me that I had to uninstall ACTIVE FILM (or was it video?) and re-run the installation programme.
So I ininstalled it all again and searched my computer for this Active Film programme/file/whatever, but was totally unable to find it. Can anyone enlighten me on that one, please?
Also, I have re-installed the GEM programme but when I try to run that, it asks me where GPL is to be found and although I browse and find the GPL programme GEM tells me it is not a valid GPL; (this of course, when GPL is installed).
I am at my wits end and am thinking of hurling my computer off the top of Snowdon because Legends is the ONLY sim/game etc that I ever play and if I can't run it, my days will hardly be worth getting out of bed for.

Ignore the Active Movie warning message.

one way is to burn all files to CD to keep your updates
then just install the updated demo with one track
and add the tracks files and other files to the demo
or let GEM do that for you
anyway keep trying in till it works
but try the new installer

I thought I was doing fine until THIS appeared:
You're using Windows 2000/XP/Vista and have installed GPL on a NTFS
partition. But the Indexing for the GPL folder is off.
You have to correct this before you try to start GPL !
Otherwise you will only see a black window before returning to the desktop.
I have absolutely NO IDEA what this means or how to fix it....
Two hours later:
I tried loading the game and... wonder of wonders, it seems to work fine!
I have installed some extra track which load up o.k. but having installed the '65 mod, although it appears as FULL 65 and LITE 65 in the list below the left-hand picture (showing the Watkins Glen grid in 1967) it doesn't seem to be in the game. I can't access it at all.
Have I missed something?

I recently installed Windows Vista on my Imac (bootcamp!) and trembling, I tried to install GP Legends with the aforementioned GP Installer (see three posts or so above). And lo and behold, it works brilliantly! It even works better than ever before. I was even able to drive a 1.28.xxx on Kyalamy, which for me was astonishing because I had never been able to drive under 1.40 anywhere.
On top of that, I used a XBOX 360 controller... computers have come a long way.
So the GP Installer seems to work fine...

In GEM, there's a Carset button. In the window that comes up, you need to enable the 65 mod by moving it from the inactive to the active column. The full65 and lite65 drop down listings describe the graphics only, which you should use when you use the 65 mod, for instance.Originally posted by Barry Boor

In addition, although the RSC forum is down there's an up to date GPL Troubleshooting FAQ at http://gplmz.bcsims....?showtopic=3714 This FAQ is an essential resource as there are so many quirks with running GPL.
There are many links to RSC threads, but the main GPL links page is at http://www.gpllinks.org/ if you're looking for anything GPL related.

I solved it last night and this morning drove a Brabham at Kyalami - my first run on Legends for almost a year.
Many thanks to all who have assisted me in the reinstallation of this wonderful programme.

You should also try the 1966 F1 mod 1966 F1 mod for GPL
and, if you like wings, the 1969 F1 mod 1969 F1 mod for GPL .
Before running a mod, I would suggest to launch GPL as it comes and to create an specific player for each mod, i.e. Barry Boor 65, Barry Boor 66, and so on.
Then install the mods according to the installers, run GEM+, click on the Carsets button and activate the mods. Go back to the main screen, select a player and then select the mod for that player from the drop-down menu to the right of the Carsets button. Repeat this procedure with each mod. This way, next time you change the player, the respective mod will be automatically selected.
Before moving on, install the recent patch for the 65mod that you can find here: 65 mod patch for GPL
Enjoy

You just need to purchase the GPL CD at http://www.sold-out....roductLabelID=1 for a mere £4.88.Originally posted by Keir
A number of posts back I asked about the pitfalls of installing GPL on a lap top. The aforememntioned Laptop has the 2004 Watkins demo installed and it seems to work fine. What do I need to do to get the whole game installed ??
Then Install it using the GPLPS installer at http://gplps.org/wb/...l-installer.php
It's just a matter of putting in the GPL CD without installing it, then run the installer. Simple as that. As Arturo said, first create at least one driver name, then install GEM and the mods. GEM will let you select the mods easily.
There are some 350+ real tracks available at http://gpltd.bcsims.com/ including many classic circuits that don't exist any longer.
Regarding laptops, other than the hope that it has enough horsepower to run the graphics (but if it runs the 2004 demo, it should be OK), the thing that you should remember is that there can be no power-saving features running, which are common on laptops. Not even the screensaver.

GEM = [general environment manager] for GPL
it lets you switch between or add tracks, seasons, cars sets and alot of other stuff in GPL
painlessly
it is a great program and avoids alot of manual work and fiddling around
a BIG THANK YOU to all the guys who create this kind of stuff for GPL
and give it away free on the net

It was originally GPL Engine Manager, enabling swapping engines from one car to another (and nothing else). It was seen as hastening the death of online GPL racing and indeed of foreshadowing the death of GPL itself. Its originators, Paul Thurston and Gary Tall, suffered much abuse at the time.

The game as installed does not have the "driver fix" or the latest graphics. Is this normal ??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you use the GPLPS installer ? If yes, there is no need for additional fixes and it includes graphics updates to all the original 11 tracks.

but it sure is a environment manager in its up dated versions
and I THINK THAT BEST DESCRIBES what it is now
and for a dead sim GPL looks to have a long life and many fans post that time

I have GEM installed and both the 65 and 67 carsets working. So far so good. Now for the bad news:
1. The game refuses to accept my driver name in the Driver Information window. It says 'Unable to Save Driver Information.'
2. Whenever I load the game, I have to recalibrate my steering wheel and pedals. Previous incarnations did not do this.
3. Any set-up changes that I make AND save, are not there the next time I load the game. (I am loading it through GEM, by the way.)
4. It refuses to accept any alterations made on the options menu; e,g, I type in English and it immediately defaults to metric again.
So, am I missing something again? Or what have I done wrong?

Just a vague thought - are the Properties of the drive or folder you've installed GPL to set to 'Read Only'? Sounds as though it's not letting you write amendments to it so if that;s the case, uncheck that box. This is the suggestion of a non-computer geek, so feel free to treat it with disdain. Hope you get it sorted anyway.
Have to say that inspired by your original query, I revisited GPL and then installed the Brands track add-on, which I'd never managed to make work before. Now it does - no idea why - and viewed from the cockpit of the 1966 Owling Onda, it's really a bit special.
Good luck.

Hi Barry,
First, use Windows Explorer to see if there is a folder under players. If there is one, delete it.
Then launch GPL directly, then create both the 67 and 65 player. GPL will ask you to assign your wheel/pedals buttons and to calibrate the wheel. Set the graphics, control and sound & gameplay options. Be sure to set each players default car as Grand Prix type, and damage to advanced or realistic, all from the Training menu screen. Once you have created both players, exit GPL, start GEM+, assign each player to the respective mod and let me know if it worked ok.
Sometimes there use to be a problem with the player´s name. Be sure to put Barry at the First Name box and Boor 65 and Boor 67 at the Last Name one.

This is on a new Vista PC and using the GPL installer it works perfectly (running it using opengl graphics). Installed GEM+ and everything is working well. need to connect up my old external HD as it has all the circuits etc I've downloaded in the past.
Also using an X-Box controller as mentioned above.

Well, if you think you can help me with setups... I am trundling around Monaco at the moment, absolutely deadlast (I qualified 12th in Kyalamy)...

I'm not criticising GPL "because I'm bad at it" by the way. Far from it, I whipped out the Lotus 49 last night and drove it pretty easily round Cadwell, but in a way, I don't feel the cars are JUST controlled by the tyres being on the road. The cars don't slide just because the tyres have exceeded the grip available, if that makes sense.

I really gave up after trying online racing with GTL as the frame-rate wasn't constant and too much lag online.
Sadly, I don't have time anymore for computer games if I want to restore my Formula Vee and get it running (also need more time to finance running that Beach.) I might be back into Racing sims as a tool to memorize tracks tho, the new GPL stuff really looks interesting.

One question: does anyone know if there's an easy way of getting the replays to a video? I hope I can ask people for pointers...
