From Jayski, what JJ has to do to end the Chase.

Clinching Scenarios: What Johnson Can Do To Lock Up The Championship: With two races left in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, #48-Jimmie Johnson leads the standings by 73 points over second-place #5-Mark Martin and 112 points over third-place #24-Jeff Gordon. With the standings tight as the season comes to a close, everyone wants to know what Johnson has to do to clinch the title.

Phoenix: For Johnson to clinch at Phoenix International Raceway, he will need to lead by 195 points after the race. Currently up 73 points, he'll need to gain 122 points by the race's end. If he does that, he will clinch no matter what any other driver does.

Homestead: For Johnson to clinch at Homestead-Miami Speedway, he will need to average a fourth-place finish over the final two races, or fifth and a lap led in each of the final two races, or sixth and the most laps led in each of the final two races. If he does that, he will clinch no matter what any other driver does.(11-11-2009)

Realistically, I think he'll do it with a top 5 and a top 10.
Does Phoenix usually provide good races?

Thanks for posting that video OLB. I used to think MW was an annoying dufus, but he has grown on me to achieve just dufus status now. He can be quite witty.

I hope the chase does not end in Phoenix.

Here's to hoping for another epic failure from the #48 team, and that this time Martin can capitalize.

I'm a Gordon fan, but with their epic failure in Texas he's pretty much out of it. If he can't win, I want to see Martin finally get the championship he's long deserved.

Even if the Chase championship isn't a "real" championship, in my book.

NelsonPiquet via twitter: I am in Oklahoma right now, practicing go kart. I will be in Phoenix next weekend watching Nascar race.

Piquet, Speed, Trulli, Salo and JPM, like an ex and current F1 get together this coming weekend......

I've followed his tweets ever since the picture of him with Trulli surfaced. Since then I find he expresses himself in writing quite well for a doofus.

Trulli and Salo are going to be at the race?

Maybe someone can convince Piquet to let the air out of JJ's tyres and saw a hole in the floor to let exhaust fumes into the cockpit.

Phoenix has a different take on the oval, completely flat track with two sharp turns, one really big one along the back, and only one straight...none of the turns are the same, so there's no perfect set-up, so you have to give up a little in one corner, to be a little better in the other..... both JJ and martin have wins here, martin is the defending track winner from the spring. usually lots of long green flag runs, often times it's a fuel millage race.

here's some video from last year to show the track.

You know, I like strategy, but it's kind of funny, and pretty sad, when the crew chief is telling a driver in a car RACE to SLOW DOWN.

I heard it at Texas, too. Can't they at least use different words, like "lift early," "save me some gas," etc?

Well anyway it's seriously funny. It's like the total opposite of

Considering JJ's record at Phoenix I fully expect him to virtually wrap up the title there.

It's not so much his prowess that will decide it as the relative prowess and finishing position of him and his nearest competitors.

JJ can win and lead the most laps but as long as MM finishes second JJ can't clinch.

championships have been won and lost by $5 parts breaking, tires blowing, and so on... a simple loose lug could cost them laps and the title, and martin is right in position to capitalize on any bad luck from jimmy. it may seem like everything's wrapped up, but far from it.

Jesus christ, thanks for stating the obvious. Put it this way, would you bet against JJ right now, especially knowing how well he's done in Phoenix in the past? If he doesn't win the championship this year it'll be a huge surprise.

i'ld bet against him. not cuz i think he'll lose it, but because the odds of him losing are around 20 to 1, easy way to turn $100 into 2k if the unexpected happens.

JPM 17th: sucked in qualifying car got loose on power and lost a ton of time out of 4......
Truex on pole--they switched the cars on them!

Papis 23rd...pretty good for a go-or-go-homer. I think at Phoenix there's more room for the driver to make up time.

Pity about the crash at the end of the race would have been nice to see if Kyle had anything left, though it looked like Harvick had him covered. Last few cautions were just guys running out of talent.

Let's hope not, Phoenix's sheriff not being renowned for his patience with furriners.

Good one Red Stick.

Hornaday and Harvick win Trucks (championship and race, respectively). Tagliani crashes in qualifying, Edwards wins N'wide race, prolonging championship decision another week as Busch finishes 9th.

Montoya 17th, Truex 4th in only Cup practice today, earlier practice was rained out (!).

You should of heard Kyle on his in car when Brad wrecked Denny, "Someone needs to get hold of the NASCAR officials, this is ****ing bullshit, the 88 just nailed the 20 right off the road and had two shots at him just missed him the first time. What is wrong with this kid." Words to that effect, I quite enjoyed listening to Kyle whine about his car all race, he is pretty consistent, the guy is good though so many times he nearly lost that pig of a thing he was driving.

In Brad's defense Denny to push Brad out of T2 causing Brad to get out of the Gas and lose a spot on the restart, did it warrant punting Denny off into T3/4 at a fair rate of knots, I don't think so.

I have a really good sequence of shots when Kyle got out of the car and stomped off while the media was trying to interview him.

Carl Edwards was very quick today.

That was an intense interview. Danny practically had sworn revenge on Brad. I doubt that he'll be able to follow through, though, because NASCAR is bound to warn him after such a clear and direct threat.

Nascar should park Crashalowski. Period. Pure road rage, if he can't control his temper he shouldn't be racing at all.
Kyle was right the 88 hit the 20 twice to get the job done. What an a-hole.

The first payback tap was fine, the second spinning Hamlin in front of the entire bunched up field was stupid. Imagine the entertainment value if Kyle had been taken out and lost a hundred points or so. I mean, he was mad enough stomping away after virtually clinching the title :D

If you haven't seen this yet, you have to watch it.

This is akin to a football player saying "I'm going to take the opposing player out, no need for FIFA to get involved."

It's downright scary.

The worst part is, Denny Hamlin is 100% correct.

Next time, he needs to say "just a racing incident, nothing to see here, move along" and then go and do what has to be done.

Denny's commentary is great on so many levels...the best part is how he tells NASCAR "don't worry about it, I got this one, guys."

Does anybody know if there was a "discussion" with the two after yesterday's race? Because there's a race, oh, today where this thing could be settled, with significantly greater downside to innocent bystanders.

I think Denny is done bothering with that fvcktard on a personal basis. And I'm pretty sure Crashalotsky is too proud to go ask forgiveness.

Denny seems to indicate that scores will be settled in the arena where the contre temps have occurred, which is the Nationwide series.
