When I came back to the States to spend Thanksgiving week with my family, one thing I noticed as I went through my stack of mail was an absence of any issues of The Alternate, the labor of love that Phyllis Devine assembled and distributed to a small, but hardy band of readers. I had a bad feeling about things. Last night I found out that Phyllis died. I realize that most of those here have never heard of The Alternate or Phyllis, nor would they care much for the usual run of articles, but that would be their loss. The Alternate and Phyllis were Old School and I mean that in the best possible way. She had a dream and she just went out and did something about it. Many a time I may have raised an eyebrow at something in The Alternate, but at least here was someone encouraging people to write and submit articles that would otherwise never, ever see the light of day. You don't see much of that these days.
Farewell, Phyllis, I will certainly miss you!
