I have just learned news of this new DVD release from Terrific Stuff. Looks like a potentially interesting mix of subject matter. Although the title refers to "Formula 1", there is a pre-war clip.

TERRIFIC STUFF ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF NEW DVD: THE SAGA OF FORMULA ONE - VOLUME 1

Terrific Stuff Ltd has released "The Saga of Formula One" on DVD ( £17.99+P&P). As a Christmas Promotion, they are offering a 10 percent discount on this and all its other DVDs. Readers just need to enter MOCK79 in the discount box on the checkout page of their website at http://www.terrificstuff.co.uk and the discount will be applied to the total order (excluding P&P). Full contact details are at the foot of this press release.

Volume 1 contains the first of a series of films produced by the famous motorsport film producer, Alain Boisnard of AFAVA. "The Saga" includes rarely-seen archive footage, combined with images which Boisnard shot for Elf Petroleum, plus plenty of superb footage which he shot all over the World, over a period of three years, especially for this programme.

The commentary comes from the highly-respected and very knowledgeable Bob Constanduros, who adds his own, often candid, views on events.

"The Drivers That Made History" takes us from the earliest days of motor racing in the 1900s, with heroes like Boillot and Nazzaro, and works its way through the era of "The Silver Arrows" during the 1930s, with Carraciola and Nuvolari.

Next, we move onto Fangio and Moss where, in a very candid interview, we hear them discuss their rivalries over the years. Jim Clark's short but superb career is followed by Jackie Stewart and Niki Lauda, who describes in a frank interview his thoughts at Mount Fuji, where he retired, handing the World Championship to James Hunt.

Finally, we reach the extraordinary and often bitter association between Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. They both talked to Boisnard about this frosty and often dangerous relationship. Their comments give a revealing insight into F1 at the time; it is strange how it mirrors some of the problems F1 faces today.

This film is a stunning mix of brilliant racing footage from the 1900s up to1992, plus the huge bonus of the interviews which Boisnard shot with the drivers of the day.

"Monaco: The Jewel in the Crown" is another remarkable piece of work from Boisnard. This time, we look at the history of one of the oldest and certainly the most prestigious event in the F1 calendar. We start with early footage from 1929 and end in 1992, with those
sensational final laps where Senna had to dig deep to fend off the attentions of a very determined Nigel Mansell.

Once again, Boisnard managed to get interviews with Stewart, Lauda, Prost, Senna and Patrese. They all talk about the unique challenge which Monaco presents a driver. To emphasise this and to show what an extraordinary place Monaco is, we get a lap around
Monaco, driven by Senna, using some stunning 'on-car' film footage. There is also some amazing footage in which we see just how complicated and costly it is to run a GP in this tiny, busy, glamorous Principality.

"Helmet Designs" - Volume 1 finishes with a fascinating 'extra', which gives us interviews with Mika Hakkinen, Nigel Mansell, Jean Alesi and Stefan Johansson and explains the extraordinary thought processes behind their helmet designs.

TS-DVD6 "The Saga of Formula One - Volume 1" costs £17.99 (plus £1.50 P&P in UK) and is now available through http://www.terrificstuff.co.uk, or by post from
7 Moat Court, Shaw Close, Ottershaw, Surrey KT16 0PH.

Sounds pretty good, but a pit they had to put "Formula 1" in the title. Perfectly understandable though in this day and age

This was out in a VHS boxed set years ago, I'm told it's been re-mastered for DVD.
