Hi!
I have only the pure statistics of that race.
Rindt winning from pole (0.7s faster than
Amon). Bell`s Dino finishing second, nearly
50s down.
Of course you saw that race, Ray. Did Rindt`s
exciting driving style show at the Farm?
Why could Graham Hill not run with him?
The Sandown meeting, a week later must have
been a close Amon/Rindt fight. Did you attend
that one too?
By the way, I think a book on the Tasman Cup
is overdue. You should give it a try, Ray...

When you posted that question, island, I was busy driving down the highway on the 1300+km run to Sydney via Dubbo. Then I visited several people, including Barry, dropped in to sort out a couple of things at MRA and speared off into the night towards Nowra. Slept for a couple of hours on the road then went to look over HMAS Albatross, which was used for a couple of race meetings just after the war. I took a few photos after the Navy had cleared me and assigned a driver for me, then I went to visit an old friend, who assured me that the road to Braidwood wasn't as bad as many had described it.
I set off then determined that no matter how bad it was it wasn't going to delay me... an hour and ten minutes later I was in Braidwood wondering what the hell they were all talking about and heading towards Albury, still some 350kms away and I had to be there in time to take photos of the Wirlinga circuit, used pre-war. There was some mucking around here, because one long straight had been disused, cut up, built over and all that sort of stuff... more on that later, I had to get back to a business meeting at Illabo, 215 kms north, then another 65kms to my daughter's place... greetings, etc then my first bed in three days. Woke nice and early, helped with the building of a trailer, decided I wanted to spend more time with my grandchildren so hung around until after 2pm, then hit the road for Sydney, another meeting, visits to a few more people then struck out after midnight for Brisbane. Decided to go up the new road, but first needed a little sleep, got three hours on the side of the road, then did a 900km sprint for home, just over eight hours despite the constant concern for marauding police radar. The new road was great, thanks, zero traffic, a few little twisty bits and some long climbs, but once up on the tablelands it was good scorching territory and the Datto loved it - just sat on 160ks for a long time...
Now, for Jochen at the Farm - I feel that his practice day, where he set that extremely fast time people were to talk about for years, was a very different exhibition to his race drive - fast but smooth, aided immeasurably by the high wings, no doubt. Hill had not come to grips with things on the Saturday, then his engine got wet on Sunday and he spun in his frustration, had two pit stops to dry the electrics then set fastest lap of the race.
Sandown was strange, Amon leading the whole race after passing Rindt on the first lap... on a circuit where you would think that the power of the DFV would eclipse the Dino... maybe it was the drag of those big wings on a circuit that clearly required less of them.
