I reckon the second version of F1 Championship is better. The first version is far too twitchy for the game pad.
Yep GGG,
Noticed the tyre thingie - a right curse too. At least the PS1 version allowed you a preview of the weather. I lost the prototype championship due to having slicks on a wet track.
Anyone else notice that 1st corner at Brno?
It seems to make the car spin for no apparent reason. No matter how many times I try to repro it - it never happens until I'm racing along and BANG! I'm sideways. Dead weird that.
Enjoy your laptime busting!

i haven't been playing the game for a month or so (been doing F1 Racing Championship instead...), but if people are interested maybe we could get a laptime competition here. my best was a high 3:33 in the Sauber.
also, i agree-- that last sector (Porsche curves) is the key to a fast lap. with more setup options, you could probably get it so you didn't have to slide the car so much in there... but that would be the easy way out, right?

So where do you win this wonderful Sauber that you speak of?

I won the Sauber by winning the intermediate sportscar championship. It's purple coloured.

So FredF1, what do you think of the tire wear in this game, it is brutal! I find it interesting that in some of the championships I did better to let cars pass me and conserve my tires so that I could pit later. Funny, because I'd win without hardly seeing another car I'd be way behind them, but then after the pits I'd get out in front and open up a huge gap on the fresh rubber. Very well done, technically speaking.
Now that I have the Ferrari wheel I need to set up a seat that allows me to use the peddles, and then use the manual transmission, then I'll start to work towards winning Le Mans!

The 3:33 was in expert mode. I've actually found that I'm faster in expert than in intermediate... I guess I let the car slide a bit in corners, and you can't really do that in intermediate. And yeah, in intermediate the other cars are way too slow.

You're right!!
It WAS by winning the 24hrs race (In Intermediate Mode). No, I'm not that sad.;)
It took about a week - I just saved it every time I pitted and continued the following day.
To be honest, I haven't played the game for a month or so. I kept meaning to do the 24hrs in Expert Mode - but just couldn't decide which car to drive. I want to drive the BMW prototype but I just can't shake off any of the cars I pass when it comes to the Mulsanne - They're all over me and then I have to fight my way back by outbraking into the chicanes and getting a brief lead before it all happens again! If I pick the Toyota, I can leave 'em for dead on the straights but lose all my advantage in the twisty bits.
The Sauber seems like a compromise between the two.

I'm cheating a bit by racing in intermediate to get the cars back that I had, then I'll switch back to expert.
Fred, I know what you mean about the BMW, I find the only way to make up places is in the last sector, the straights and Mulsanne are tough to stay ahead. I find the Panoz's to be dirty drivers, so qualifying ahead of them helps.
I'm saving the expert le mans races for last, after I've won everything else. Eau, interesting that you said the expert was quicker, I was thinking that last night. You can hear that the power cuts out if you turn the streering wheel too much, and I know that I'd be able to at least be pulsing a little bit of throttle through the corners.
Well I'm up the to prototypes (I can only fit one championship and one time time per evening). Do any of you have any ideas what sort of challenges we can have for eachother. There is of course fastest lap at Le Sarth, dry and wet. What position we can get to, starting from the back of the grid. I'd like to keep le Sarthe as expert only, and I think that I'll force myself to use the manual transmission (even though it's probably a disadvantage), now that I have wheel and peddles, shame that there isn't a controller config that allows the Ferrari wheel to use the F1 style flipper paddles to be the shifter

I found the Mercedes to be somewhere between the BMW and Toyota in terms of speed and handling, i.e faster than the BMW on straights, but doesn't handle quite as well. My car of choice is generally the BMW.
I assume you guys are using the lowest wing setting and low fuel to go for fast laps at Le Mans?
GGG- I think manual transmission is faster than automatic... particularly in those final curves, where the automatic transmission can get a little confused and slow you down by making too many shifts. I have an Act Labs wheel, which lets you use the shift paddles, so I guess that helps.

Other tracks seem to favor mid-wings, but Le Sarthe's long straights negate any last sector benefits.
With the intermediate level BMW w/ AT, I could only get like a 3:39, I'll need to work on that this week. So expert MT it is.

I only played the championship in the PSX and have reached the GT1 class. The 24 hour race in it sux major though...
All i did in the DC version which is way cooler is the 24 Hour race so far. Still havent played Championship and havent uncovered any cars. But now that ive read about all the stuff that im missing, i will wait a bit on playing the 24 race to play with the champ series.
1 thing i liked about the PS version is the tighter handling of the cars than the way they are in on the DC.
Still the DC version kills the PS 1.

Have you set the options to save?
It's button 'A' I think?
You should be able to tell because it puts up a 'Saving Game' screen after you complete any races, qualifying sessions etc.
I have a similar problem with 'Hidden & Dangerous' but I put that down to the fact of having so many command button combinations that it just gets confused - especially in 'Map' mode.
The game just locks up and I have to restart the DC - losing all my unsaved progress.

I have checked out that the VMU does still have the memory saved, two games as a matter of fact (turned on DC w/o a game in it to just look into the VMU).
I do press "A" at the start of the games, but thanks for asking the question.
I can gain cars in the championship mode, and save the games. I can also save a le mans 24 race as well. The problem seems to occur when I try to either a) save my race wins from quick races, or b) win the le mans track time trial car.
I also found that if I set a new lap record in time trial mode I also "lose" my memory.
Obviously I'm not losing anything, since I seem to still be able to find it in diagnostic mode, but Test Drive LM seems unable to find it on the VMU, and the VMU is totally empty except for the 17 and 12 units of memory taken up by the two saved games that are still in there.
I'm confused, I think I'll go to IGN and see if there is any talk about this problem.
If you have any ideas...

Sounds possible.
Being in the software testing business, there's lots of little bits like that which get through the system. Weird combinations that nobody could predict would happen.
Tried taking the BMW for a couple of quick laps earlier to see if I could get down to your times.
(Un)fortunately have been to the pub for a few well-needed post work beers with the team. Not in peak driving condition.

Right, more sober tonight.;)
Le Mans circuit.
Sauber in Expert Time Trial mode

I know it's good for another or second or so. Just can't seem to hook up a decent lap.

Right GGG,
Same setup as above - 3:32.935
I've still a few tenths or so to go as I backed off a bit for the twisty bits in case I put it in the wall.
Did the 24hrs Race in 1 hour mode in Intermediate and unlocked the Peugeot 905 too.
It's got amazing acceleration but it's a bitch to stop though. The handling isn't up to the Sauber either.

The peugeot sounds like a challenge, sort of like the toyota, another car that I've been wanting to tame.
So Fred...you gonna watch Le Mans this weekend, tanja and I are going to record the full 24 hours

Of course!
Eurosport won't be showing all 24hrs unfortunately - Enough to make it worthwhile though.;)
Yep, the Sauber seems to be the car to have.
Still having trouble with it in 24hr mode.
Can't decide whether to go with medium or low downforce. Full tanks ain't helping either.
I got up to 215mph on the first section of the Mulsanne - about 10 mph quicker than the BMW.
Mind you, I seem to have 'lost' my Toyota
I've won it before but now it seems to have vanished.

I'll continue working toward the Sauber tonight, now that this VMU seems to be behaving.
Speedvision has all 24 hours, tanja and I will be taping it ALL! Saddly Fox seems to have bought speedvision, so I'm not sur ethat this "all 24 hours" thing will happen again next year.

Next stop le mans sub 3:32.9
Sounds like a gauntlet being flung down to me!
Nah, I don't know where I pulled that lap from.
I did the first section in 0:39.XXX and couldn't understand where all that speed had come from. As I said before - I took the twisty bits a tad cautiously - I was figuring that I was on for a 3:35.2 something.
I can hit the 3:36 - 3:37's ok but never dipped under until THAT lap. Still can't even come close to it. I'm hoping it's not just a fluke of the game.
I'm not quite happy about the timing system on the game - I was qualifying for Le Mans yesterday and did a good time - Or so I thought - when the results came up - I'd been given a time which was 2 seconds slower than the one I'm certain I did.
I noticed this happening in the F1 game as well.

In the final screen before the race where you can chose to race or go to the garage, there is a very small icon on the race option (in the same place as the gears on the setup option) that shows you the weather....took me ages to spot it though!!
(haven't played the game for a while so the description may be a little bit wrong....)

So FredF1, I have some bad news for you...Silk Cut Jaguar, at Le Mans...
3:31.114
This car is seriously fast, I know that I can go sub-3:30 with it. I've yet to win the Sauber.
ggg
p.s. by the way, my first run of the Jag I spun it (360deg) at the hairpin at the far end of the track. My time 3:35.4xx, yes I beat me previous fastest lap with a spin. That was when I figured I shant be using the BMW for fastest lap times:)
#76
Posted 13 June 2001 - 03:36
ggg- i think the jaguar and the sauber are about equally fast. even the same weird engine noise. the jag & sauber just feel like they have way more power than anything else. well, as much as a video game car can feel that way.
ok, i have my work cut out for me. i'll be back.
#77
Posted 13 June 2001 - 07:43
How did you win the jag?
I noticed last night that I DO have the Toyota for Le Mans but not for the Time Trials
Also, when qualifying for Le Mans with the Sauber - it's much quicker than when doing the Time Trial - even though I keep the same settings.
There can't be THAT much extra fuel in the tank it TT mode. Alright so I have it on 'continuous' setting - but still.
Re: The REAL Le Mans.
Eurosport are doing a week long build up - including showing the 'Classic' race on Saturday - Cars from 1949-1964 - Can't wait!!
Plus they're showing a history of the race tonight.

FredF1, what are your fuel consumption settings, that might account for the faster times. The Le Mans race varies with different duration of race. Another one of those things you learn crusing through the menus, think that it's in options/game.
Wierd about the toyota, I don't have it yet, I am working my way through the championship. Last night I thought I'd give the open-LPM championship a go in expert mode, after two races I had 3 points guess I still have a lot to learn.
I've yet to start a Le Mans race, which I'm only going to race in Expert mode, so I don't expect to win right off the bat, but I really want it to be tough and realistic, i.e. cars and drivers tough to beat.
Re: the real Le Mans, that is cool about the classic car race, speedvision won't have that, and a nice documentary on Le Mans would be cool, always thought that that would be a documentary worth making.
Eau Red, I like the bat/weight analogy It's funny though, the jag has very different turn in points, and you can do som egreat understeer (under breaking) and over steer (with throttle) that just can't be done with the BMW. So don't get too messed up with the BMW.
One thing that I've learned that helps lap times is the turn in on the first fast right hander, just after Dunlap, is at the over head signage keep the throttle planted and turn quickly all the way to the right. Seems like you'll go off, but instead you come out at about 130mph!

Posted 14 June 2001 - 03:10
So what were your sector times? On my faster laps it looked like 39.x in the first sector, and then 1:58.x in the second. And around 2:36 in the third, althought I don't usually look at that time, since they flash it at you as you're going through that 90 degree corner. They should really show your times after you're done, so you have a little time to look at them.
Fred- I have two of the three available Toyotas, and I have the same problem-- I can only use them at Le Mans races, not in the time trials or at any other track. Maybe it's supposed to be that way, since I don't think Toyota raced those cars anywhere else.

Pissing rain and I went for Intermediate Tyres and Medium Downforce - A bit hairy in the twisty bits, but I leave everyone else for dead on the straights. No chance of giving a free tow to anyone.
Just got to the first pitstop in 3rd place - Tyres were in bits.
Checked back through my 'Results' and it states that I haven't done the full race before!!
I did the bloody thing in intermediate mode a few months ago - That's where the Sauber came from!!!
jlove - Thanks a heap!!

Hey, it looks like my best time would put me on pole for this years Le Mans. Kinda cool that the times are so close to the real times.
As long as you make it to the finish line then.
I'll be cheering for you.
Err, am racing Le Mans 24hrs in Expert mode in the Toyota - Am leading - Have gotten to the 2nd pitstop with 1:30 over the 2nd placed car. Thing is.... There's no way I'm ever going to lose this race now is there? That's another 21 and a half hours to go without any serious challenge.
This looks like the DC game has the same problem that the PS1 game had - Namely, when any of the AI cars came upon backmarkers, they slowed to a crawl and just hung around behind them.
I got into 2nd place - noticed that the lead car was 37 seconds ahead - then I saw a pack of slower cars ahead on the little circuit layout - within a lap, it was down to 16 seconds and a lap later I was right behind it. The AI cars seem to just pull alongside a lapped car and drag race it instead of the smart option of getting a tow and slingshot past.

alright kids. 3:30.105 in the Sauber
Feck!
I can't compete with that right now.
My current race at Le Mans is a rain-soaked affair. Just like last weekend in fact.
Mind you, I've managed a 3:37 in the pouring rain with wets and full dowforce with half tanks in the Toyota.
Doesn't sound too realistic to me when the REAL cars were only putting in 3:40's on Saturday.
Anyways, figured out my problem over having completed the 'full' 24hrs race before - Err, that's because I never did the 24 hr mode -just the 6 hour one - That's where the Sauber comes from.
Currently am just past midnight and over 2 laps ahead of 2nd placed car.

It wasn't a clean drive, just before the final set of curves by brake paddle BROKE! I couldn't control the brakes for crap, I had to both pull them on and push them off, because the spring broke. I ended up going straight through the first of the last two chicanes, I caught curb and lots of gravel, gained conrol and pushed as hard as I could through to the start/finish line. I don't feel overly good about posting this time, I might have actually saved some time by straightlining through the last chicane, which isn't cool. on a very fast lap I was heading towards a 3:25, but I lost it at that blind downhill/left hand hairpin just before the final sector. It'll be a bit before I can repair my wheel .

I know the feeling.
Used to have this great little joystick - steel shaft and no frills layout - great for thrashing around on GP2.
Then, one day, while taking the Lesmo curves at Monza - Bang! Into the armco and no more righthand steering. A sad, sad day.
I opened it up but it was hopeless, the insides were shredded from too many wild manoevers.

With the CLK I was able to do the first sector in 37.8, my fastest ever, but have yet to put a full lap together, it handles differently than the Jag, but it appears to have potential. Though, as I've said before the Jag can do a 3:25.xxx, I just haven't been able to finish out the lap when I am in contention.

How do I unlock the CLK?
I can't seem to find it.
I've completed everything bar the Time Trials.
Did the 24hr race in expert mode - won by over 12 laps!!!!
One thing, about the weather, does it ever start raining, stop raining and then start again?
Only, it always seems to start off fine and the get wet and stay wet.
Other minor quibbles - It was raining, yet the car was casting a shadow and there was a shine on the bodywork from the sun?
Also, why isn't the night section darker - might as well not have lights at all - It just gets a bit gloomy and that's it. Not much fun when you can still barrel into the bends at 2 am with perfect visibility.
Still can't get below 3:30:00 - My best is a measly 3:31.011.
I've come close on a few occasions to a 3:29 but seem to bounce the kerbs a bit too much towards the end of the lap.
Cheers,
Fred
