Received this email lately ... I came accross your site and the P34. You probably know that
we have put chassis 6, ex Peterson, back on the track, this last year.
Cross-ply tyres were made by Avon, and due to the superior understanding
of tyre technology today, the car is a different animal. We are still
using the Peterson set-up from 1977 - more or less - and the balance of
the car is exceptional, along with the advantages of the small wheels,
extra brakes etc.

It's very good of Avon to make these tyres, without which the P34s would not be able to run. There's a picture of the ex-Depailler car in January MS winning a race somewhere or other - seems to be going well.

I have seen it running a couple of times last year - I looks very odd against the other cars - and for some reason - I assume its the tyres - it sounds really odd when cornering. Its good to see it out though.

What't the sound it makes when cornering?

It's hard to define/remember - its just different to that which the rest of the cars make - I guess its just that the front wheels are revolving faster and as there are twice as many as usual the front tyre sound predominates.

As a flag marshal you tend to get used to the sounds that cars make when cornering and thus react when you hear something unusual - 'coz it usually means trouble.... (and it might be heading in your direction)

Flag, did you look at the working in Motorsports thread? Can you spare a few moments to explain your involvement, how you got started, various exploits and how someone now can perform a similiar function? I've moved the thread to the front.

The P34s noise could be down to the fact that the front tyres are of a different construction, and as they are revolving much quicker, no doubt have to have a harder compound to compensate, and therefor "squeal".
I would imagine there must also be some degree of "fight" between the true direction of every tyre. Derek Gardner would probably jump down my throat for that.

Also the wheels and brakes being much smaller, there may be some "whistle" generated through the the much smaller brake and wheel ventilation tracts.

Next theory is the wind hitting the huge back wheels without having been interupted by the front ones.

Or Perhaps he has whatever the McLarens have now that make their F1 car sound so distinctive.Jo Ramirez was in the team then wasn't he?

Maybe the wheel bearings protest at their rotational speed...

Dennis - I posted some info on myself and how I got started in the Introductions thread - its on about page 3.

Will try to find time to put something together on marshalling and how to get involved.

It's a little belated, but I see that Tyrrell P34 -6 won the Thoroughbred Grand Prix Cars race at Brands Hatch on 9 April, in the hands of Martin Stretton. He also set a fastest lap of 1m 21.877s (115.32mph) but as they have changed the track a bit since the 70s, I am not sure a comparison with times then would be fair.

I think Stretton is quite a fair driver because he beat some stuff that ought to have been quicker (eg Williams FW08C, Lotus 91, Brabham BT49D) although I think some of the skirts and ground effect benefits may be restricted by the rules of this series. Other cars included a Shadow, Ensign and other Williams and Tyrrells

Those who were interested in the recent Brabham thread will be pleased to hear that BT33 -1 won its class in the race in the hands of Syd Hoole.

Can anyone who went to this meeting tell us anymore?

I was there and the P34 won fairly convincingly. It pulled away from the start and was never caught. The gap to second place wasn`t awsome but was quite big.

I think the Brabham was the only car in it's class that ran and finished quite low overall (last or second from last).

That is the same car refered to in the first post owned by Simon Bull. Some of its success must be due to the quality of the team. This is no small budget outfit.

Do any Brits know if Amanda Stretton who fronts the Channel 4 GT reports is related to Martin who races the P34? Daughter, perhaps? She doesn't do a bad job and is quite tasty (mind you , at my age, any women with her own teeth is tasty...)

Martin Stretton is American I believe, or at least he was when he raced in the ill-fated North American Touring Car Championship, so any relation to a British sports presenter I'd say would be unlikely.

I remember seeing Amanda Stretton in the paddock at Silverstone during the Coy's historic meeting. She was driving in the 50s sports car race in a Widi MkII of only 1220cc, a Climax I guess, (does anybody know of this car as I can't remember it). She qualified 15th for both races (second in class) but I don't know where she finished. I couldn't help but notice, but she looked fiiiinnnne in the paddock afterwards, with a few beads of sweat gently rolling down the soft curves of her....

I think I'd better go for a cold shower.

Nelson

Amanda Stretton is Martins wife.

Martin Stretton is one of Britain's top historic racers who drives a wide variety of machinery, from such as a Maserati 4CM to the aforementioned Tyrrell P34.
He has done a little bit of contemporary racing in the North American Touring Car Championship in 1996 and the FIA GT Championship in 1997-1999.

The Widi sports car was built in Belgium, I believe.

Yes indeed, 1220cc is a regular size for a Climax FWA or FWB engine.
