I'm looking to find out if lists exist of participants and/or winners of the Snowman Rally from the 1950s and 60s.

The rally runs in or around Invernesshire in the highlands of Scotland, and it is of course still an annual event today as part of the Scottish Rally Championships.

Would magazines from the time (Motor Sport or Autosport) have listed results from the Snowman?

Any and all help gratefully appreciated!

Thanks, Robin

Motoring News is the place. They always had much better coverage of rallies at that level.

Thanks for that - where would I find an archive of Motoring News magazines? Is something available on the web, or can I buy back copies on DVD?

Thanks, Robin

So far I found very limited data of the Snowman Rally which exists since 1955. Contacting http://www.highlandcarclub.co.uk/ might be helpful.

Robin, If you are near to or in London a complete run of Motoring News, from issue one, is held in the National Newspaper Library at Colindale, out on the Northern Line near Edgware.
This is part of the British Library, but for now access is easier than in the main library and you can get temporary membership on the day with relevant proofs of identity.
It's a good idea to look at the website http://www.bl.uk/res...ers/newsrr.html for what they need in that regard, and to order stuff in advance which can only be done via the British Library catalogue.

Chris - thanks for that. I'm in Edinburgh, but I feel a trip to London coming on!

Hansfohr - thanks, I've already e-mailed the Highland Car Club but haven't had a response. I should try again, as hopefully they will have records.

Robin, as you're in Edinburgh, before trekking down south you could check out Scottish Motor World in the National Library of Scotland. According to their on-line catalogue at www.nls.uk their run covers the period you're interested in.
Motoring News didn't get heavily into rally coverage until the 1960s, so you may not find anything about the 1950s events in it, nor did Autosport cover them then.

I would try Graham Gauld and John Fife. They will be the best bet.
