Just googling for no real reason, and searching on here, and found Jim's post here that Dr Ed was declared "legally dead" in 1978. Any deeper story here?
Google putting newspapers online is quite useful, I found here for the first time what sort of a doctor he was - as well as some more background info. Not much, but at least it puts a bit of flesh on the skeletal story of a NASCAR also-ran.

Dr Ed Hessert?

I should have given more detail at the time of that post, but what I heard years ago was vague. IIRC, his small plane went missing over the Atlantic and he was never found. I realize this sounds remarkably similar to Mario Rossi, but that's the way I heard it described - by someone who should have known and was reliable.Just googling for no real reason, and searching on here, and found Jim's post here that Dr Ed was declared "legally dead" in 1978. I wish there was a book that would, as you say, flesh out the skeletal stories of the NASCAR drivers. Many of them had great local/regional careers before moving on to the national level. And many of them had interesting backgrounds beyond that. Look at what turned up with Richard Jenkins' "Where Are They Now?" for Indy drivers.
