Dragutin Esser was, according to my research, indeed from our part of the world, born in Croatian-German family in the region of Srijem, today a part of Serbia.

In 1981 I did the Lovcen Hillclimb near Cetinje/Montenegro. Language problems meant that I couldn't speak to a lot of people. Apart from Dagmar Suster already mentioned here, I remember a young guy from a wealthy Belgrade family, Tihomir Filipovic. He then had a very quick VW Polo prepared in Germany and was planning international outings. In fact I later found his name on European Renault Cup results sheets in the years they used the Renault 5 Turbo.

 

There were also Swiss-based racers from Yugoslavia. There was one Zdravko Oreskovic racing Formula Fords around 1990, on Swiss national level.

 

Another one was Bruno Uroic, a dentist of Croatian origins living in Olten/Switzerland. He raced in the late seventies with YU-licence mainly in Yugoslavian events, but I saw him also at Zeltweg during a GP-weekend, I think in 1977.

 

Marijan Babic rallied and hillclimbed a Citroen Saxo, mainly in Switzerland, but also in France.

Milivoje Bozic ran a Porsche 55A in the late 1950s in international racing. The last trace I have of his Porsche that after it was crashed and rebuilt somehow, it was exchanged for a Fiat 850 to an Italian collector in the 1960s. Does anybody know the fate of this car?

Tihomir Filipović indeed became multiple champion of former Yugoslavia, in circuit racing, hillclimbing and rally. He is actually from Zagreb and is a Croatian driver. In 1990. he became first Croatian driver to start (and finish) Paris-Dakar rally.

 

Branko Uroić is, I believe, son of Anton Uroić, the most successful Croatian motorcycle racer between two world wars.

I had a girlfriend from Nice? spelling in Serbia. In here younger days [about 40 years ago] she went too one motorsport event. I believe it was a hillclimb though she was unsure. She did remember cars [sedans] going upside down into the crowd. With no serious injuries. This on closed public roads.

There were (and still are) both hillclimbs and circuit races on closed public roads in former Yugoslavia, and accidents such as the one described weren't (and still aren't) unusual.

Apparently there was a trace that the car may have ended up with a member of the Prada family, but it has never been confirmed
