Too many mistakes creeping in again. He would have won today without his costly errors.

His errors are like trolls in this thread, they show up once in a while and at the same time.

Whit errors! if you mean when Lewis overtook him he was a sitting duck, he had no grip,

at worse he was 3.9secs behind Lewis and when Lewis pitted he was 1.9secs behind

so he was clawing it back just ran out of laps and tyre's.

He took himself out, if Button took him out he would have got a penalty for it. You Ferrari fans should know that anything against Ferrari gets penalised. But you guys always are blind to my reality!

I really hope you are joking. He made two noticeable errors, one where he left the track and allowed Vettel to pass him. But he re-fixed it by overtaking Vettel again.

And then we got the part where he left pits, in a car that do not heat the tires really nice and with new brand tires. Even if he had left pits perfectly positioned, Hamilton would have overtaken him anyway due the tires.

So I don't know how Alonso lost the race with costly mistakes.

Yes and they were enough to lose the race all by himself.

If he did not make the first mistake he would have not lost vital seconds which were enough to win the race.

and the 2nd mistake, blaming no grip is a poor excuse. Did you guys not see what Hamilton did with new tyres coming out of the pits vs Webbers RBR fully up to temp.

Not every car behaves the same way. It's well known Ferrari has problems warming up the tyres, first laps are always very difficult, check the other races.

I don't think so. Hamilton was unstoppable today. Like I said, Alonso made a few errors but they were non-critical as he still got P2. Those mistakes did not cost him the win.

Well the McLaren was able to post the best sector in the sector 3 on the outlap, where we were able to do this on the sector 3 on the first lap after the outlap.

But when Hamilton came out of the pits it was only 1 corner, hardly enough to get up to temp.

Had overtaking points been further in the lap then that would be a valid point.

I think Alonso did very very well today given the circumstances. The 2nd place was the best he could get even if he hadn't done that small mistake in the opening laps. The Mclaren-Hamilton combo was too much fast today.

Yeah, a poor excuse because it wouldn't be an excuse- it would be fact. In any other situation the speed differential would not be so great. Webber and Hamilton the previous lap is not directly comparable as Webber was still attempting his pass on Hamilton at the same point of track at which Hamilton was clear of Alonso.

Can people not just enjoy a great race with great battles?

Ok.

So you are absolutely sure that McLaren and Ferrari have exactly the same 'base' grip just after the pits?

I've always believed Lewis and Alonso are a class above the rest and races like today just prove it for me. Both were classier than the guys driving the faster RB7. I just love it when Lewis and Alonso do battle on track, it is the only current driver rivalry in F1 that is exciting, tense and unpredictable. God how I would love to see them in the same car again, I feel robbed that we didn't get to see them have a rematch in 2008.

Today was brilliant for F1

I thought Alonso drove well today (as did all the top 3), and I wouldn't say that he made a mistake any more than I would say Hamilton made a mistake when Webber got by just before the end of the lap. They both went wide and allowed the driver behind to get through, but both got that driver back. It was more a set back (at that moment) than a mistake.

I agree - it was great to see the Ferrari and the McLaren battling at the front, and great to see that the Red Bull joining in WASN'T Vettel - not that I dislike Vettel or anything, but it was nice for a change!

Good race though I got a bit disappointed during the last laps of the last stint on softs since I thought Alonso would make up for that 3 seconds gap Hamilton had. It seemed possible at some point but the necessary trend wasn't confirmed. I wonder whether the lack of fuel played its role —it was so argued in Hamilton's case last race at Silverston (anyone has an idea of how many tenths?)— but what I think most important is that the low temperature didn't favoured the Ferrari at all.

You should not be dissapointed, it is pretty clear looking at his lap times vs Massa's lap times that Fernando was saving fuel in the last stint.

I thought Fernando said in the post-race newser that conserving fuel played no role in his inability to get past Lewis in the last stint.

EDITED to include Alonso quote.
Q. Fernando, the top three finishers were all pushing hard but maybe pushing a little bit too hard in your case, as you ran out of fuel at the end of the race. Did that compromise your fight with Lewis towards the latter stages?

Fernando ALONSO: No, not really. I think in the last stint we could not get any closer to Lewis. I think with the medium tyres we were not too quick, so we just controlled the gap with Mark and secured the second place.

Alonso proved today again that he is the best. That car was a far behind the McLaren and Red Bull in the first laps of the stints in term of getting heat into the tyres. Alonso pushed very-very hard.
Nando ate Mark in Valencia, Lewis in Silverstone and today Seb at the Nürburgring on the track. He is the most aggressive driver, the fastest and the most clever given how he can manage the race. I am really really fascinated by his talent.

I wouldn't say he is 'the best', but what he does best when he hits a good stride is maximize points and results at every chance. Valencia, Silverstone, Nurburgring; that's basically three impecable consecutive GPs. It is also how he became double WDC.

IMO, if this becomes 2009 redux, he'll be a much greater threat to Vettel than Vettel was to Button. Likewise Hamilton.

Not really. Hamilton was 3 tenths/lap faster on the harder tires. Even If Alonso kept the 1 to 1.5 seconds by staying in front of Vettel, I don't think he could have fended off the faster Mclaren on the harder tires.

Lewis can drive as well as Fernando, but he is not mature and not that consistant. Alonso is always in topform. Lewis is prone to do mistakes and can't manage the tyres as smart as Fernando. In terms of speed he is at the same level as Nando.

I am an enthusiastic Alonso supporter, but he has had his share of brain farts, too. I certainly would not say he is always in top form.

I do think he is more rounded than Hamilton, but that is mostly because he has seen the highs and lows of the business. Hamilton has always been the no.1 driver in one of the best teams and has yet to experience any real lows. Vettel ditto.

Having survived the disaster at Mclaren and two horrific seasons at Renault is what makes Alonso the best driver today. Hamilton and Vettel may be just as talented, but until they have been face-down in the mud and dragged themselves out again, they are not the best.

Wake up! There´s a german guy (only 24 years old) he´s going to join the same achievements than Alonso with almost 100 races less... we can talk about class above :smoking:

Alonso was betrayed by Mclaren and I consider him a much better driver than Lewis (that not means that I not consider Lewis an amazing driver too).

I don't understand.

I know this is not a support thread, but i don't see the point of coming to the thread named "Alonso" to say "the block was better" or to talk about Vettel's achievements.

In case you didn't notice Vettel was 1 year and a half in a not so nice team and then jumped right to a Newey's car that have been title contender for 3 years.
Meanwhile Alonso came to F1 in the worst team of the grid to later go to a middfield brand for years (till that brand could make a title contender car).

So I don't understand how could someone do comparisons about what two drivers achieved in X races taking into account those two drivers were not given the same tools equally or similarly during that number of races and that they both didn't have to cope with the same degree of competitiveness. Vettel has had a title contender car more often than not, and in two out of three years where he had it his car was so diminant that he had only real competition from his own team mate.

Therefore, an unfair data to take in order to talk about the class of these two drivers.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Erm... Actually if you even bothered to follow 2008 season, indeed the Toro Rosso was the fastest car at Italy and under the conditions that took place that day. Vettel got the pole position and Bourdais got 4rd at qualifying. Not that Vettel was given the victory, he was nice and is a talented driver, but again, denying a fact and reality to hail a driver is completely oblivious.

Also, the Toro Rosso from back then wasn't the Toro Rosso we know today despite that some Vettel's fans want to believe it was. In reality It was a car that allowed Vettel to finish in the top 10 exactly ten times and five times in the top 5. If a driver is able to finish in X position is because the car can run as fast to get that X position.

Of course Vettel is a very good driver, made the difference back then, and blah blah, but again you are bringing some quite unfair sarcasms there.

If you want to believe Vettel is a class above it's ok, but if you need to be unfair to hail him...

It's like if I said Alonso's car at Hungary in 2003 wasn't fast... He made the difference as Vettel did in a Toro Rosso but saying his car wasn't fast would be pretty dumb just like in Vettel's case regarding certain races such as Italy.

Also, I never heard anyone here saying Webber runs a car with a different chassis than Vettel, so besides unfair you are being a demagogue. Enjoy your cave.

Fred drove a great race today indeed. To say that the McLaren was much better then the Ferrari today is wrong, IMO. Massa was the fastest man in the race today for periods, and managed to stop Vettel getting past, while Jensen couldn't do anything with the McLaren. The Ferraris were not as good as getting heat into the tyres, but once they did, they were a match for the McLaren.

Im not a huge Alonso supporter - you know, the whole McLaren thing, but...

You have to give him credit. He has been in fine form of late. Destroying his team mate, and keeping the front runners on their toes.
