Lotus 7Y

Not sure if this is suitable for the Nostalgia forum, my apologies if not
I see Paul Matty is selling a clubmans car called a Lotus 7Y. I know about the factory variations on the seven theme, the 7 1/2, the Three Seven and the 7X, but this is the first time I've seen this one.
http://www.carandcla...uk/car/C143320/
According to google it was a car built around the time of the 7X and named in honour of it. It was based on a Seven S2, but in the '70s it was rebuilt with its own chassis and body, and renamed a PTP?
www.motorbase.com/auctionlot/by-id/1055613491/
So what makes it a Lotus now? It does have a Lotus diff and suspension, but I would have thought many specials of the time did. [I think it looks great by the way, no disrespect intended]. And does anyone want to fill in the history gaps?
Regards
Glenn

It eventually found its way into the hands of Jeremy Bouckley who hillclimbed and sprinted it before selling it on. The current owner bought it after consulting Paul Matty and after a restoration job competed in the "Paul Matty Lotus Challenge".
I believe that the car still sports a Lotus chassis plate (possibly its original one) so it is this that "makes it a Lotus".

Barry Flegg built the 7Y in 1969. It featured an independent rearend, an Elan centre and Lotus 61 hub carriers. Quite a beast!

Not sure about your year. Barry Flegg IIRC was joint winner in a 7 of the Lotus 7 chship with Tim Goss and the radically revamped 3/7 in 1969. The factory built up the 7X for TG for the 70 season so the 7Y would not have been 1969. Sadly I cannot find my note/cutting on the 7Y at present

compare it to the cost of a standard S2 7 these days, and it's a bargain!
I want it.

ISTR that the X & Y were both built up on series 4 7 chassis.
RL
Both were originally Lotus chassis but 7Y now has a bespoke clubmans chassis into which all the bits and bobs from 7Y were fitted.

Any clarification, Steve? Isn't it now just a bitsa? Still value though for limited opportunities.

When the car was for sale some three years ago I made enquiries about its history. I talked to Jeremy Bouckley and it was he who told me that the original Lotus 7 chassis had been destroyed. Jeremy owned the car for a while and it was he who found out about the new chassis. All the various bits from the original that could be salvaged (single seater rear suspension, hub carriers etc) were transferred to the all new 'clubman' chassis that was built at the time. Jeremy didn't race it as the 7Y but as the "Lotus PTP".

Looks solid enough and reasonably well finished, if slightly agricultural.....

Crossle: £120,000 +

Merlyn: £93,000 +

Elan 26R: £149,000 = £362,000

Makes the 7Y / PTP look like a real bargain in the value for money stakes at £6950 which is roughly 1.9% of the total cost of buying those other three cars!

Actually Roger, there are any number of 're-creation 26R's around already. The Crossle & Merlyn may have to wait a while for their turn.......

I actually half considered making an offer for the 7Y yesterday, but as always happens to me at Paul Matty, people just walk past you as if you're not there! However, I don't think you could run it on the road as the cops would do a Wheatcroft Lotus 18 and burn their hands on the exhaust! If you didn't want to go up hills with it, you'd be stuffed really.
You could always sprint it - Croft, Lydden, Ingliston, Castle Combe etc.

I have seen a couple of Evantes for sale of late, one of which had a Vegantune TC in it.

Crossle continuation 9s has been in production for many years .

Crossle continuation 9s has been in production for many years .
Well providing they never actually stopped making them, it's not really a 'continuation' in the common usage of the term? Surely it must therefore class as an original?

I am pretty sure that there was a break in "production" so the 'new' C9s must be continuation models.

If the price is £6950 how little would you have offered!!
At that kind of money you could break it up and get your money back, you certainly wouldn't want to try making one...
Unfortunately I've promised to keep the number of projects down otherwise I'd also be tempted but then I have just noticed his Lancia Fulvia....

Guys,
I did a little video tribute to the 7y. Hope you check it out and enjoy it:
2 things
1. the archive footage you used is of the Coldwell Mink, my old '65 1000cc Clubmans car, and not a Lotus.
2. I'd have appreciated it if you would have asked before lifting my footage from youtube.
enough has been written on the subject of copyright over the years. I don't have a problem with people using and enjoying the film, but I'd prefer if I was asked first.

Thanks for the clarification and my apologies for not asking. In hindsight, I realize that I should have asked. PM sent

Hi Glenn,
I found this thread while checking out the site for Lotus 7 cars. If you are interested in the original 7Y, there is a short history of the car at SimpleSevens.org.
Regards. S7.
