I think the FIA should change the rules so that when a driver qualifys 1st, the driver will get awared point/s.
Like champ-cars in america, the driver gets awared a point for qualifying 1st.
If the same system from champ-cars is applied into f1, it will make the qualifying session a bit more interesting. With this rule, if the driver ends up not picking up any points in the race for some reason. At least the driver would get point/s for his qualifying effort that got him on pole position.
If this rule is added, it might make the championship battle between drivers alot closer.

Have you done your sums on how the last 5 years would have panned out under your suggestion??????

Unlike CART with its Safety Car galore mentality and fuel economy runs, Pole/good grid position, is already a hell of an advantage in F1, and significantly more advantageous than in CART. People are already going flat out in Qualifying.

I can't see any merit in your suggestions, with the way F1 is at the moment.

It would definitely be interesting to see what would happen, although we´d have to asume that most of the points will be scored by the top teams making the gap wider between them and some of the smaller teams.[p][Edited by Alien on 12-03-2000]

I think it would be better to give it to fastest lap. I believe they should not award points to anything other than race performance, the driver is rewarded with fatsest time by having a few less feet to travel to complete the alotted laps to finish the race.

I don't think a point for qualifying would make things closer. But I DO think that the point structure should be changed so that other teams can get some. As we've seen so many times the past few years, if you're not driving for Ferrari or mcLaren, you're shooting for 5th and 6th place, 2 and 1 points respectively. How about having points for the top ten? Something like:
1-14 points
2-10 points
3-8 points
4-7
5-6
6-5
7-4
8-3
9-2
10-1

Drop the winner's points back to 9 as it was prior to 91. Prior to that you often got a dark horse in the running, whereas since then it's always been two drivers winning most of the races and getting too many points to allow someone else who's consistant a chance. You'll have more HHF 99-type seasons with 9 rather than 10 points awarded.

Points for pole in CART works because you never know who'll win the placingl. Awarding a point for pole in F1 would only make those winning the races more dominant already. When was the last time a driver scored poles but couldn't regularly covert that to win. Do we really want WCs decided by end of July?? There's already a lack of competition, a point for pole will only separate the top guys even more from the midpackers.

Vac, I don't like your points system. Why? I like it when 2nd and 3rd places equal the same points total as 1st. It allows a single driver to negate a whole teams efforts, such as RB against MH and DC in Hockenheim.

The only way I could see a point for pole is if to take that point you have to move to the back of the grid.

Very interesting article from the AtlasF1 Archive:

http://www.atlasf1.c...8/borsboom.html

Now the Champcar system gives points to 12th place, poll, most laps led.

Comparing the two, you see that the same people finish at the top, but the "pack" is changed slightly and the "Backmarkers" are rated that where all equally scoreless under F1.

These are good things. The F1 system needs more depth. I would suggest that 8 places would be better.

As far as a point for poll. Give something for Poll and a DNF, that is fair. Also makes a poll more important because a POLL and a WIN eradicate another team. As mentioned above.

Poll: 1
1:18
2:11
3: 8
4: 6
5: 4
6: 3
7: 2
8: 1
